Hey guys, I have been having spyware/trojan/virus problems lately and want to solve this by building a proxy machine that can scan all outgoing and incoming information for viruses but also allow gaming if possible...Is this kind of proxy feasible? Is this kind of setup even considered as a proxy? I have an old amd athlon build from 6 years ago and if I throw in a dual gigabit network card, I could place this between my modem and router...
I understand why you think you need a proxy server but i think what you want is IPCop its a linux distrubution, its basically a hardware appliance firewall, it sits between your computer and the internet. You can do all sorts of stuff, virus checking, email scanning, encrytion and all other security features a hardware based firewall brings. You can also set it up as a proxy server if you would like.
+1 Just get a decent firewall program. and OT... DeathAwaitsU I only just noticed you were in Blackpool as well!
so, what I am looking for isn't a proxy but a box running a firewall OS? This makes sense...Thnkx guys...I am not worried about electricity and I need to find a new use for the old athlon machine. Are there any alternatives to IPcop? The only reason I am asking is because if anybody else has any other OS they use for firewall, it would be good to know...
If you listen or watch Twit awhile back Leo's security show, Security Now was sponsored by Astaro which make hardware firewall appliance but also offer a software package for free for non-comercial use.
If your adamant on using the machine for something, lose the router and use the old pc as a firewall/router/file server. A proper hardware router is better than the shite you buy of a shelf, i don't know about you guys but i kill routers for fun :/ Only a linksys has ever survived. @Pookey, yea man i am your in st annes arent you?
All the routers that I have bought in the past has been a linksys...so how do I go about making a proper hardware router?
Doesn't have to be a router based distro either, you can use your fav distro and just modify the iptables, there is also programs for most distros to do this (eg Shorewall)
I use a Viglen MPC £70ish quid with a rebate code from ubuntuUkPodcast, its about the size of a stack of cd cases. Its not uber powerful, geode processor and 512mb ram, but it runs my torrents + firewall. its peak power is about 7-10watts
