I am having problems with my monitor/PC. Sometimes when I turn it on the monitor does not come one, I do not get the beep either. To get it to work I have to turn the power off completely and start again. This does not happen every time but is becoming more frequent. Could this be a known Vista issue?
That doesn't sound like a vista issue to me. Sounds more like a hardware issue. What do you have for a system? off topic: Adam_bagpuss, that cat. My girlfriend has on in her room. It creeps me out...
A_B The monitor. There is power but no signal is sent to the monitor from the PC. c2e9 As for system I'll get back to you if thats ok
OK. so it sounds like a VGA/onboard related issue rather than an issue with the monitor. the lack of beeping seems to indicate a deeper system hardware issue, possibly with the PSU or CPU, as no beeps (provided the internal speaker is connected (i.e. it beeps normally on startup) would mean that it's not POSTing (Power On Self Test) correctly.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem. It is only an intermittent issue so hopefully the MoBo is not fried yet and can be fixed.
if the machine is not posting its down to either your mobo, RAM or GPU usually. try taking 1 stick of RAM out and then boot. if nothing swap the sticks around. try a different GPU if poss its unusual for a CPU to blow but its possible. try taking the CMOS battery out waiting 30 sec then put it back in (make sure you unplug the system first) if you can eliminate the RAM and GPU and a mobo reset from the equation it is most likely a fried mobo.
Does the monitor say anything when you turn it on, i.e no signal? and for the record have you been inside your computer lately or been moved about etc? just checking if it's like a problem I had with my monitor when I first built my pc where whilst doing cable management I knocked my cpu fan which wasn't very stable at is it. I turned on my pc and the monitor wouldn't detect until I ended up pressing the CPU fan back down onto the processor (just a bit of pressure) and boom worked fine. Only takes a few moments to try it, so may as well. Then I went to collapse on the sofa relieved thinking I'd ****ed a 1k pc I'd had for a few hours rofl.
adam: wouldn't RAM give beep-code errors? I know mine used to, but then - last time i REALLY blew RAM was 8+ years ago eldrivetime: when you start up your PC, do the fans start turning (i.e. the fan on the power supply)? If it does, chances are it's not your CPU that's blown. Most motherboards won't turn fans when the CPU is fried.
HI Fans turn and the Mobo lights come on. One thing I have noticed that must be related is that it does not seem to shut down properly. When I shut down the PC it seems to forget to turn the monitor off.
I would be looking at the RAM and the PSU for this one. Run memtest86 on it overnight to see if you get any errors; and as bagpuss suggested try swapping out the RAM. If you've a spare PSU you could use I'd try that out as well.
I'm not trying to be nit-picky or even cocky by saying this but I would check the graphics card first, from experience. Could you let us know what brand the 9800 is? We've been seeing a lot of faulty 9800's recently, thankfully they usually fail within the warranty period and are replaced free of charge.
Unicorn - i was thinking about that possibility as well. If the PC normally beeps on POST (i.e. the internal speaker is connected and working), then there should be beep-codes. Mind - not necessarily if the card is fried.... +1 to what Unicorn said.
After checking all the details on the bios I have found nothing wrong there. So now I am going to check for any loose connections, I have ordered some extra RAM as well. After that i'll try another PSU.
Thanks everybody for your input. Seems that the problem was RAM. Upgraded to 4gb and it POSTs everytime. Much Love Mart
Excellent, glad to hear you got it sorted mate, and that it wasn't anything as severe as a faulty card
