I had my PC blessed so I wont need antivirus.

No seriously, many bank acccounts and ISPs offer free antivirus like kaspersky - worth looking into.

    i don't have a virusscanner. i run linux

    (someone had to do it!)

on the other hand, i don't have any on my gaming rig (win7) neither. there is this slight possibility that i'm infected by some virus, but as long as it doesn't give porn popups, doest slow my computer down noticeably, and doesn't use the internet in a way i can detect it: live and let live i say!

Switched to MSE from this and won't look back. AVG is all very good, but I just prefer the fact that MSE looks after itself most of the time. Plus it seems to use less resources in my opinion.

@alpaca: thanks for helping the botters >:-(

I am surprised no one mentioned blink from Eeye (eeye.com). it is the only free all in one package that i know of that also has HIPS built right in. i use it on all my personal comps.

as far as i am concerned if my security solution does not have HIPS it is not a real security solution. protect the memory so the bad guys cant cause damage in the first place. . .

seriously, bit really needs to at least give it a look over.

Hardly a surprise Avira's detection rate has always been right up with the best and it's unobtrusive way (to get rid of the nag screen just browse to the application directory, right click on avnotify.exe and in the security tab edit the permissions so that you deny it read & execute ability) mixed with fast response and low footprint make it the obvious choice.

EDIT: Oh god just noticed the source of this proclamation, not any reputable av comparative site but yet another arm of the ever more retarded dennis beast, shame I was happily going to spread linkage around until I saw that.

I now use Comodo Firewall and MSE.

But AVG is lightweight? Very lightweight? Has AVG changed in the last year? Because the very reason I moved away from it was because it was not lightweight, ontop of the numerous false positives. Avast was kind of lightweight to me, and MSE is VERY lightweight.

So how much did Grisoft pay PC Pro for the favourable review? AVG caused me nothing but problems on several computers and other reviews of this product show that it misses viruses which other free anti virus tools detect and clean.

Best free anti virus is still, in my opinion, Microsoft Security Essentials.

I've had nothing but grief from AVG over the years and tbh find it extremely difficult to believe it has such a high detection rate. Unless it has changed considerably since 8 (The last I tried) then I wouldn't personally recommend it to anyone. It has regularly missed viruses easily detected by Avast, Housecall, MSE & Vipre amongst others. I have also found it's ability to effectively remove many viruses even after detection is hit and miss.

Haven't used anything since a bad experience with Norton a few years back, until recently, then installed MS security essentials. I'm impressed with it so far.

AVG missed a lot of what seems to always infect me. Spybot I consider malware in and of itself. I hate that program. I run Avast and am quite happy with it. Is Bit considering an antivirus comparative study? I think they did one a few years back, but an update would be cool.

i use a paid for version of avg, only because the free one doesn't cover servers

the free versions don't offer full protection, but do give good basic protection.

for the average user i would recommend a paid for version over the free one. only because the average user doesn't have a clue, there is no support for free versions, except via somewhere like here, which average users wouldn't necessarily find.

Use avast here. No intention of going back to AVG either, it was a pile of tripe when I last had it as was avira. Both failed to stop virus's and their scanners where just as useless. Never had a problem with avast at all so far. GF's dad uses a payed version of norton and its crippled the PC.

Avast user here. Been using it since 2005 I think. Only slight niggle is the registration to use the free version, but no big deal.

Having installed AVG countless times, most of the time failing the install, then having to reboot to start the install again. This was with free and Pro versions.

    Brads

Edit: Looking on the PcPro website the only mention of Avast I could find was this

Verdict: A distinguished history, but outclassed by the competition.

Personally, I tried MSE for a month and thought it was awful. It took 4 hrs to scan 750GB, whereas Avira Free and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware can scan all 750GB concurrently in a total of <1hr 30 mins..

Avira also has a high false positive rate apparently, but I prefer to be on the safe side ;)

By the looks of it, the bias on the PC Pro review was clearly in favour of AVG as they announced that the competition, including both Avira and Norton offered better protection. AVG may provide a free offering but at risk of giving away personal data is not one I would consider acceptable.

I have found MSE to be a more robust solution and is also free and I also make use of the open source Clamwin Anti-Virus along with the standard windows firewall, the rest comes down to applying some common sense and sensible browsing, for which I use a combination of Chrome and Firefox for the most part.

    AVG -> Avira -> MSE

Used to use AVG read somewhere that Avira was better. Avira add crashed me out of game during raid and also read that MSE was better so am using that now.
Easy to use and no nag/adds to worry about.

I'm using Comodo Firewall and Avira Antivir Personal. Seems to do the trick. I think we should remember that unless you are going to warez site all the time or opening navisexclip.exe in your email the chances of getting any serious infection are realitivly low.
