First shot was with my D700 and 24-70, at 24mm. Hows that for auto focus, focused right on my eye

Second shot was testing my 135 f2.8 AI-S at f2.8, Iso 4000.

Went back to Norwich for the first time in six and a half years yesterday - a new Japanese restaurant has opened on Tombland, and I was able to get nice shot its bright red lanterns with an old church steeple in the background. Can't decide if I prefer the above version, or this one though - help appreciated!

The second one is better. Let me explain why. Composition. In the first shot, the clock tower, or whatever you want to call it, is mish mashed up against the Chinese restaurant, and the large aperture used, as diffused any detail that would actually make you notice it in the first place. Now, if you didn't want the viewer to see the tower, you could have shot it differently. In the second shot, there's some space between the restaurant and the tower, and there's still detail in the background. Without the gap between the two buildings, there's no reference, it's just two buildings one on top of the other.

Rose with hearts



Gridded Flash handheld to camera left and aimed at a low angle to give reflection. rose sits on Black acrylic, fairy lights in background and a diy heart cutout filter for the Bokeh effect.

 

My baby (now 6 1/2 weeks old). She's probably sick of the camera flash already.

 

Got back from visiting relatives in Malaysia. Lots of cows where they live. Mooo

 

Two from a week or so ago, when I had the new canon 100mm macro to play with. Amazing lens, incredibly sharp and contrasty. What do you guys think of the edits done on these? Both are pretty heavily edited, but I think its not too over the top.

Thanks for the feedback Greg; I actually thought the composition of the first shot was stronger - the problem with the second shot (my framing of it) is that there's a fairly large area of dull stonework above the clock face. In the first shot, so my reasoning went, you get a more interesting sense of composition because of the diagonal line from red lantern to blue clock.

Where I do agree with you is about the importance of the gap between the two buildings - I think the first shot loses something not having that there. Perhaps what I really need is a shot that combines the best of both these two images.

Also, whisperwolf, that shot works really well - especially the heart shaped flash.

Love the shot of the eye. I keep trying to get one that clean but so far no joy.
I have the Canon 100mm Macro and i have to say i find it disapointing. Maybe im just not practiced enough with it but I cant seem to get the shots that im trying for with it

That is a fantastic photo. Love the custom Bokaeh filter. the whole things almost looks like a render.

 

My baby cousin's first birthday

My little cousin turned one on Friday. Here's two pictures of her with her dad.

 

Are you using a tripod draxin>? Are you using a flash at all?

Using a tripod and the Canon MR-14EX macro ring light.
They come out in focus and well lit they just look MEH

 

The one I posted was the only one out of like 50 that were correct. I had it on a tripod, no flash or anything, natural light in the bathroom with the curtain down (it was quite a long exposure). I was using a wired remote though which helped.

 

Unless you diffuse the MR-14 properly it will always leave your images looking flat. It's one of he most convenient alternatives but it also creates, for the most part, the worst lighting.
