I'm trying to upgrade the memory on a Toshiba Satellite.

Specifically: Toshiba Satellite A110-522 (Model PSAA2E-01C00JEN).

It just will not take ANY modules unless I leave the original stick in there and then it only see's half of the added 1GB module.

Any one know of problems these have with memory?

    Its on BIOS ver. 1.5

    Cheers

[edit] Just updates BIOS to 2.3 and still no change

Since there was only one stick to start with i can assume its 2GB's. When you put in another stick (assuming its another 2GB stick) Windows only reports 3GB's of total RAM (or something near that number). Thats probably cause you have a 32bit OS. The only way ull (Windows) see all the sticks is if you get a 64bit OS.

As to why it doesnt like it when the original stick is in there my best guess is that Toshiba told its OEM for boards to program the BIOS that way unless the stick dies on you. But the stick still works so i wouldnt worry about it.

(I dont have that laptop and i couldnt find it on toshiba.com or google soooo thats my best guess)

It only had 1x 512MB installed, Toshiba listing it as 2GB Max.

Tried several different pairs of 1GB modules but it wouldnt even get as far in POST to output to the screen before it restarted itself. It would do this 5 or 6 times before finaly staying turned off.

Didnt matter whether I tried fitting a pair or singly.

The only way it would even start with any of the 1GB modules was to refit the original 512MB and just add any 1 of the new ones.

Everything was fine and stable then, but only half of the added 1GB module would be recognised.

Seen plenty of mem probs in PC's, but not laptops. :wallbash:

WTF thats so weird. How much RAM does the board support? (i hope its not 1GB). I agree with your :wallbash: and so I will too :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I wonder how much someone on ebay would pay for it. :worried:

    Oh well,

Its gone back now. An extra 512MB RAM (even though it was a 1GB stick) and a bit of fettling on the Windows side and he's chuffed to bits with it's performance now.

A memory specialist said that there were a 'rogue' batch of these laptops, but their 'special' RAM didnt fix it.

Would have been nice to resolve it, but ultimate goal acheived.

Bagpuss, where did you get the ram from? did you try the crucial website to check the board for guaranteed compatible ram specs first? Some may laugh at me for suggesting this, but it's saved me on a couple of occasions.

Looked on Crucial, but ended up getting it from offtek. They offer money back compatability too. Usually my local supplier is good so I dont usually have to source from internet.

I'll just keep the RAM in stock so no real loss there, perhaps this really was a 'Rogue' laptop. Hmmm.

Maybe it was just a full moon or something.

Checked in again with the gentleman, still running 100% stable, much faster and he's still chuffed.

    Just annoying for me.
