Got a new Sigma 18-50 F2.8 EX DC Macro for the Pentax K-x. It's dark and wet outside at the moment so I broke out the Dinky Toys.

Eddie: It's a shame you didn't catch the ball in the third photo, but the body language and facial expression totally make up for it. Nice shot! The first photo is just a good shot all-around - it has action, the player's face, the object of the action (the ball), and almost no visual distractions. The last point is what makes it much more effective than the second photo. In the second shot, the view is too wide and the depth of field too great; the surrounding stuff distracts from what would be a decent action shot.

Yeah, the third shot was the follow-through of a serve so the ball was long gone but I liked the body motion so much, I kept it. I don't know why I had the ap so closed on the second but, again, I liked the body shape so much that I kept that one too. I shot these in manual mode, I think some experimentation with aperture-priority mode next time might be in order but for some reason I'm not confident since the light in the late afternoon of that day made program mode unreliable so I'm not sure. I guess I need to keep shooting manual with more mindful attention on the aperture.

Some shots from a few days back, my first try shooting sports :) Most taken with a 5D mkII and 135 f/2, some with 40D and the 135, and one with the 17-40 on the 5D mkII. See all of them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clumsy_culhane/

^ Both look a little underexposed.

Digging the choc and cookie, wonder how it would have looked from directly above.

probably a little flat in all honesty. I'd have needed to rake the light across the cookie from low down to give texture and that would have killed all the light to the drink. I think it needs an angle to give it some depth.
Did take some from a lower angle as well

Oh I like that, Greg! Was it planned in advance or did you see the shadow when having a cup and reckon it could make a good shot?

It was a failure of an evening for me, here are the best of a bad bunch :(

This one turned out okayish, but it would've been better if there was more traffic to have a few goes at it.

This was a quick exposure test at high ISO and wide aperture. The "proper" shot was a 4 minute exposure that was ruined by fog rolling in and covering everything, it's a shame, the cloud movement looked pretty good.
