    Hi,

I've just done a backup over my network from one computer to another, and i want to make doubly sure that everything successfully copied across.

I have checked the file size etc and file count but these are not always reliable indicators.

Has anybody got any tips on how to exactly compare two folders and their contents?

    Cheers

I'm sure there are a million ways of doing this, although for work I use a decent program called ViceVersa to do folder comparison, backup, synchronization, etc.

You might want to try out KDiff3.

You could run robocopy in log-only mode, don't even need to download/install anything.

That is, if he's using Windows Vista or later... :)

Of course it's downloadable as part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit.

Synkron (free, open source) would also do what you describe.

    cheers guys.

i ended up actually copying the files in the end using synctoy instead of just copy/pasting the folders, which told me if anything failed etc.

i'll bear those tools in mind for the future!
