I have a XFX 5850 XXX and i got it for around £200 about a couple of months ago. It runs every game at 1920x1080 smooth, so i don't see the need to buy a power hungry, over-expensive, hot running card I can't wait for Crysis 2 and GRID 2, in DirectX11, it should look awesomesauce
Since you seem interested in DX11 and "don't see the need" for a GTX480: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/...x-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-/11 At Battleforge 19 X12 in DX11, the 5850 is running at 39fps, while the GTX480 is at 60fps. That's more than 50% faster. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/...x-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-/15 At Stalker Call of Pripyat 19X12 DX11 the GTX480 is at 47fps while the 5850 is only at 35fps. This is a 34% difference. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/...x-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-/16 At Dirt 2 DX11 19X12, the 5850 is at 62fps and the GTX480 is at 87fps, a 40% difference. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_gtx_480_470_performance/page6.asp At Metro 2033 19X12 DX11 the 5850 is at 23fps and the GTX480 is at 34fps, a 48% difference. In the States the 5850 is a $300 card and the GTX480 is a $500 card, so they're not normally competing choices. However, my point is that if you're looking for DX11 "awesomesauce" in upcoming games, you do indeed have some pretty good reasons to consider a GTX480. It's pretty doubtful the upcoming DX11 games will be easier on video cards and in the four current games I just listed, the 5850 is barely playable in two, unplayable in one, and playable in the other. Smooth framerates can be worth some money and heat, nothing ruins the immersion in a game like hitches when your framerate drops below 30 fps, which the 5850 would be doing a lot in 3/4 games I linked to.
Most ridiculous comparison ever? In the UK you can buy two 5850s (aka 5970) for the same price as 480, which will beat the 480 easily.
The person I was responding to said he has ONE 5850, and did not see any reason to buy a GTX480. And that he was looking forward to upcoming DX11 games on his ONE 5850. I noted in my post very clearly that the 5850 and GTX480 are not meant to be comparable solutions due to pricing differences, and that my links were only examples were only meant to show why he really could use a GTX480 if he's thinking about upcoming DX11. Since you brought it up out of left field, I'd point out that: Some people won't use Crossfire (or SLi) due to the issues like microstutter, and uneven vsynch and triple buffering performance. (not to mention variable scaling) Crossfire still won't let users create or edit profiles AFAIK, forcing users to wait for ATi to release patches. Also, not everyone has CF compatible motherboards. In summary, me answering his post directly and completely made more sense than you jumping in with a variable not under consideration by the OP that adds several compromises to the situation.
You seem to have a lot of trouble putting together a sentence that refutes anything I've said though. Seems like I must be posting a lot of truth, and you can't seem to put anything up but "You're biased!". So what? I'd rather be biased and putting the truth out on the board than just pointing a finger over ad over and saying over and over "You're biased!" I think people can usually figure out I have a preference for NVIDIA by the disclaimer in my sig, the "n" before my name, the NVIDIA logo, and the "NVIDIA Focus Group" title. But feel free to keep telling them I like NVIDIA.
Ph4zed has a very good point here nRollo. Why would you compare these two cards? A more accurate comparison is between the 5850 and the 470. Grr, still waiting for my 480s to turn up! Ebuyer has had difficulty receiving the stock; I should get them halfway through next week. Stay tuned!
where in england do you live? i just want to know so i can stay away from there and avoid the same fate as humanity after skynet
Ph4zed has no point at all there Pete. The person I was replying to said he was looking forward to playing future DX11 games on his 5850, and as such didn't need a GTX480. I showed him why, at his res, a GTX480 would be a big upgrade for him at DX11. Even at that I noted in the post the GTX480 and 5850 aren't comparable cards. Ph4zed just chose to ignore the fact the person I was replying to was comparing his 5850 to a 480, and that I had noted the cards aren't comparable. His bringing multi GPU solutions into a discussion about two single gpu cards is what's off topic. BTW- you'll LOVE the GTX480 SLi- fastest dual GPU and has all the features.
