Hope I manage to get my hands on one of these. Its a great shame they are releasing so few. I have a mate who actually wants to try 2 of these. hehe. Bit of a waste but I will be more than happy with one of these if it manages that crossfire to the 5870

Arma 2 does thrash hardware even more than Crysis. Unfortunately, its a PITA to benchmark as its very unstable, especially with multi-GPU setups. Its fine for one-off tests, but as a regular benchmark we need a game that works 99%+ of the time.

@pimonserry: Hopefully Crysis 2 will be able to provide that! This is truly one crazy card.

My 4870X2 did that too at a playable framerate if you put shadows to high instead of very high!

Can you overclock a standard 5970 to these speeds and run the same benchmarks? I think it could be around the same speed.. maybe a smidge slower...

@people talking about SLI-ing Fermi cards: Im pretty sure your case was not intended to be an oven.

+1 to "why didnt you overclock it?"

Oh this card reminds me of Asus's Mars. Will there be a review of the Ares?

    Where's my lottery ticket?

Good to see the performance pan out nicely. I remember the Asus Mars card didn't do so well.

Also think the latest line-up of test games is really good, nice spread of genres. The short quotes from the reviews as intros is also good.

you cant overclock the 5970 normal this hard as the chip is already on the melting point in terms of temp

Well never fear, I've bought a Euromillions ticket for Friday's £86m ($129m) lottery.

If I win, I'll build and donate an über system with one of these in for a bit-tech comp, (open to the overseas readers too). Hell, stuff it, I'll put two in on Crossfire - AND I'll donate £1000 towards your first year's electricity bill too!*

Only odds of 76 million to 1, so cross your fingers and start holding your breath - 'cause if it's me, "it could be you..." :D

*That's if I win the £86m mind you, not if I win £7.30. Just for the sake of clarity...

Would be very interesting to see how this compares against GTX 480 SLI. After all 480-SLI would be $100 cheaper.

But my big question is, why doesn't somebody do this with the 5870? Yeah, there's "overclocked" versions but they're all pretty pathetic and only result in 1 more frame.

If the 5870 and 480 are pretty much evenly matched at stock, what would happen if you cranked the 5870 chip to the 480's power and heat levels? Now THERE's a product I'd like to see!
