So lately i've been having an urge to watch 300, troy, and gladiator all over again. I was a big fan of those films and I'm just fascinated with those types of films. Could you recommend movies that are similar in style (era that is) that you enjoyed? I really like mythology and whatnot, think its really interesting.

Also really enjoyed braveheart so anything along those lines too. I like those good fight scenes and they have great stories / history involved.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    P.S. THIS IS SPARTA!!!

    Am I off topic ?

    Yes ?

    Whatever, it's a great movie nonetheless ;)

+1 for Kingdom of Heaven, it was a pretty good movie. How about Spartacus?

Oh, you mean the film where All the Ancient world suddenly develops an Irish accent for no adequately explained reason?

+1 for Spartacus - blood and sand

Also, Rome series 1 and 2.

Other than that there are several others made depicting the same eras, however these are not nearly as good. But I'll just throw them in here as B-movies are fun in their own way.

    The Thirteenth Warrior
Outlander (mixes in a bit of sci-fi)
    Beowulf
Cleopatra (a classic, well worth watching)
    10000BC

Also there is one particularly bad B-movie about the Gaul Vercingetorix and his struggle against the legions of Caesar, but I can't remember the name. It starrs Christopher Lambert in the role as Vercingetorix, and all the sets are... well, you'd have to watch it I guess. ;)

Edit: The movie is called Druids.

King Aurthur is good - got that on DVD.
Would recommend the new Robin Hood which is screening at the cinema just now.
Would not recommend Clash of the Titans.

I love this genre, but it's mostly populated with pretty mediocre titles. When I get the sword-and-sandals bug I just watch Gladiator twice. I haven't seen another similar film that's been anywhere near as good (although 300 was fantastic hammy fun).

Life of Brian, if you're feeling light-hearted.

I really enjoyed Mongol (I love Tadanobu Asano in pretty much everything he's in), and while the battle scenes are pretty epic some people found it a bit bleak. Personally I love the vastness of the landscape so it didn't bother me.

Also been watching Spartacus - Blood and Sand.

Not so much history - surely the language can't have been like that!!!, but it is just good fun.

    Sweet, thanks a lot everyone!

As for the foreign cinema, are they subtitles or translated? May just go check one out on youtube for a quick 2-3 minute clip just to see how it translates / if it's fully english. Gonna have to hit up blockbuster to rent these all now!

can't believe no one has mentioned The Last Samurai!

A truly touching film and despite having Tom Cruise in it, which, lets be honest, is usually a sign the film will suck; manages to entertain and grip. It's loosely based on the Japanese revolution although it has been muddled up a bit for theatrical purposes.

I have to say, in my opinion this is Tom Cruises best film to date.

P.S. i hated Top Gun and found Jerry Maguire deathly boring.

ED- The music is also composed by the brilliant Han Zimmer who composed for films/games such as:
    Rain Man
    Twister
    Bird On A Wire
    Thelma and Louise
    K2
    Cool Runnings
    As Good As It Gets
    The Thin Red Line
    The Prince Of Egypt
    MI2
    Gladiator
    Black Hawk Down
    Pearl Harbor
    Hannibal
    all pirates of the carribeam
    King Arthur
    Shark Tale
    Batman Begins
    The Davinci Code
    The Simpsons Movie
    Frost/Nixon
    Angels & Demons
    Sherlock Holmes
and of course Call Of Duty:Modern Warfare 2, to name only a few/

before you ask i am not his publicist, just a fan.

I actually watched 1/2 of the last samurai in school and we never finished it. I was enjoying it and none of the action really started yet either.
