Ok so a friend of mine wants to buy a new laptop, he has a budget (max) of 1100€. He's got two in his sights one is an Alienware M11X (999€), and the other is a Dell Studio 17. So The question is: which of these would you choose taking into account it's main use is going to be gaming? Here are the specs of both:

    Alienware M11X
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo SU7300(1,3 GHz, 800 MHz, 3 MB)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, Spanish
DDR3 SDRAM de 4.096 MB at 800 MHz dual channel [2x2.048]
Disco duro de 500 GB (7.200 rpm)
LCD panorámico (720p) High definition 1366x768 de 11,6”
    GT de 1 GB GDDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® 335M

    Dell Studio 17:
    Intel® Core™ i5-520M 2.40GHz (2.93Ghz Turbo Mode, 3M cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
    4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
    17.3” HD+ (900p) Bright LED Display
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650, 1GB with TV Tuner
Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)

    So, suggestions please? :D

The studio is better for gaming considering the bigger screen and graphics card but it depends wot games. I think there are better laptops out there to be honest...

Yep, no doubt about that, but the big problem here is the budget :(

The m11x is pretty good i must say.I have been using it for almst 3months now. It's battery life is quite awesome especially if you are gonna use it for school. On intel GPU it can last max 9hrs which is my current record.Nvidia GPU abt 3hrs or so on WOW.

I bought the Studio 17 two weeks ago now, and i am pleased with it, it does get quite toasty though, so definately get a laptop cooler with it. I have the 9 cell battery and get ~5 hours out of it. It runs most games okay, but i only really play source based games.

Isn't the M11x rumoured to get a core i7 upgrade soon?
I'd personally wait a bit for that.

if the main use is for gaming grab a desktop as gaming laptops are not portable really anywhere unless your the hulk

plus you get crap performance for the price

Alright people thanks for the help, he's gonna go for the Studio 17.
And yep, I couldn't agree more with you adam, I'd go for a desktop, but since he's at university far from home, he'd rather take a laptop.

    Once again, thanks everyone!
