hey guys, was just curious (i got recommended these movies by friends), I found godfather really boring (i watched only part 1) but many people are like "thats the best movie ever made" and i don't get it, whats good about it? (tell me so that i can enjoy it too) and scarface, it was going ok but the end, what everyone just dies? agreed "say HALLO to my liDLe frend!" quote is cool but else, I found it boring too. what does everyone see in these movies that i don't?
I never got into the godfather myself. But scarface I found very very good. granted everyone dies at the end but the film i didnt find boring at all throughout .
I thought both Scarface and the Godfather were awesome films, at no point did I find them boring. However even if you never enjoyed part one I would recommend you watch part two as it is better and keeps true to the Puzo novel.
I think both these films are great, I honestly do. But I think they have fallen much like Sailor Jerry's dark rum. It is quite cool to like these films - and quite often people who haven't seen them even say they like them because they are iconic and the common ideology is that it is cool to like them! I'm not trying to be so conceted to suggest everyone is like this, but some trends have massive swing in the popularity of things.
you probably just have to be in the right state of mind to watch them. I've thought the same of Godfather, then watched it years later and really enjoyed it. Never been a fan of Scarface though. Horrible depressing film, focused on a raving egomaniac. Sort of like Alfie, but with better quotes.
I've been meaning to watch the Godfather stuff, but I keep getting distracted by other stuff >.> I've seen Scarface once, and don't recall it being that spectacular :shrug:
They are both character- and story-driven movies, and as Rogan said you have to watch them with that in mind. They do not rely on over-the-top orchestrated action sequences or big-budget special effects to sell the movie; they rely on a mature viewer who wants to appreciate a well-told story, as visualized through good film making (including a solid musical score). Nobody can really tell you how to enjoy it, though. If it's not something that appeals to you, no amount of expounding upon the cinematography, acting, or story will cause you to suddenly like the movie. You might gain a better appreciation for why it's considered a cinema classic, but that doesn't mean you have to like it. For what it's worth, Gone with the Wind is one of my all-time least favorite movies, and I turned off Blade Runner half way through.
This just cost you some rep You put everything I want to say about the Godfather so well tho...aww go on, have some rep! Just don't go into it expecting an action movie. Scarface was my favourite movie for a while, different pokes etc...
I did watch all of the godfather movies a few years back, and found them pretty boring and way to long. Same with Blade Runner and Equilibrium. Never even bothered to watch those two all the way trough. I find that movies I don't understand get very boring very fast. (With the exception of Donnie Darko)
Godfather was ok, but it did get boring at times. Part I and II were the best, don't even watch part III, it SUCCCCCKEEEEEDDD Scarface was pretty good, but I think Goodfellas is the best out of the three
3 sucked because none of it is from the original book, which is equally as awesome as the first two movies. Goodfellas is great too, as is Casino. Casino might actually be better...
i love long movies so i watched all 3 godfather movies for the first time a few months ago. they were awesome!!
I didn't really like The Godfather (I've seen part 1, 2 and a bit of 3) but I loved Scarface. Kept me watching all the way through.
I think it's a little unfair/unrealistic to judge some of these old movies with modern standards. The Godfather was released in 1972, so it's 38 years old... A lot has changed in all that time. At the time it was released, it was amazing. It's the same when young people watch footage Elvis and wonder what the fuss was all about. You have to think about them in the context of the time. It's a completely different world today. You have all these ho's dancing around in little more than thongs so young people today are completely desensitised to everything. You've also had decades of heavy metal bands tearing things up and screaming their lungs out. So when you see a guy wiggling his hips and singing hound dog today, it doesn't seem like anything special. But in 1956, it was the wildest most shocking music anyone had heard, and the hip wiggling was basically their equivalent of porn. Parents used to put their hands over their kids' eyes to stop them looking at it. It's the same with movies. It wouldn't really be accurate to say The Godfather is tame, but to a young person today with modern standards, it's hard to appreciate how it was at the time. And in addition to that, I agree with "supermonkey" above that it was never really intended to be a shocking action type movie anyway. It was supposed to just be a good solid movie where the quality of the acting, characters, story, soundtrack and presentation is all key. To really appreciate it, you have to appreciate those kinds of things.
just consider that these are 30 years old movies. and at that time they were the best,, just like casablanca.
Well if you sit down late at night and watch these you probably won't enjoy yourself, but if you check the running time and feel ready to sit through it you might enjoy them more, however you could just not be a fan of these types of films.
I found Citizen Kane to be quite long and boring too, but I can still appreciate that it was fantastic for it's time.
I think Godfather is still good now, definitely aged well. +1 for 1 and 2 being the best, 3 wasn't as awful as everyone says, but it definitely wasn't as good as the first two. I thought Blade Runner was stupid, and why bring up Equilibrium? That movie was awful, I haven't even heard it being mentioned with good movies. Best recent SF movies IMO have been Moon and Sunshine.
Rogan's hit the nail on the head, it's entirely dependant of your frame of mind/mood, if I'm in the mood for a mindless comedy I won't enjoy The Godfather and won't get past the first twenty min before turning it off. It took me three attempts to watch it, but I'm glad i did and can appreciate it for the story it tells. I don't really understand the argument of not judging old & new movies together, at the end of the day a good script/story are timeless. As arbitrary examples look at anything of Hitchcock's, or It's a Beautiful Life, or Harvey, or more recently Witnail & I (I'll stop there to avoid a ridiculous list). Pitted against current hollywood blockbusters they may look dated and not have the special efects to wow an audience, but I know which I'd rather watch on a rainy afternoon and which I find more engaging. It depends upon what you criteria you judge a movie.
