Hi all I finally got my system up and running for just now. I noticed last night that CPU temps had went from around 35C at idle to 60C after a hour of Prime95, with a room temp of 22C. That seems high to me for a i7 930 that's not been overclocked yet with a Magahalems stuck on top. I still have everything set to auto in BIOS. I've not had time to mess about with them yet so voltages maybe a little higher than normal. i7 930, Megahalems cooler, Rampage 3 Extreme, 6gb Corsair Dominator, GTX 285,
That does seem high, should be more in the high 40's. The first 2 things to look at are the heatsink fitting and thermal paste. You may have mismounted it. You also may have applied too little/ too much thermal paste.
Those temps are actually fine, considering that Prime95 and other benmarking programs push your processor harder than it will ever go in day-to-day usage. Nothing to worry about
I used Artic Silver 5, and reseated the cooler about 3 times untill I thought I had the right amount on. But I never trust myself.
Those temperatures aren't at all dangerous - the 930 will automatically shut off up around the 100+ degree mark and 85ish degrees at load would be fine. I would start over clocking and just keep a good eye on it. Aside from the thermal paste and fit of the cooler, you need to make sure that you have good airflow through your case. What is your case, fan & fan direction setup?
The case is an aging Silverstone TJ09 and I've one PWM Akasa Viper fan stuck on the cooler, which only sins about 6-700rpm at idle.
Just Bought a 930 too. Is there any danger of overheating with the stock cooler or is it up to scratch if no overclocking is involved?
Of course not. The Intel heatsink (same applies for ALL processors) has been designed to sustain the CPU under hard condition (assuming your not overclocking). Potential problem that could lead to bad cooling are: - Miss installed heatsink. - Bad air flow due to obstacles in the case such as wires. - Bad air flow of the case design. - Manufacture error on the thermal paste/pad.
I did a basic overclock last night to see how high the temps would go. With a overclock of 3.8GHz a Vcore of 1.24 and CPU PLL of 1.90, the core temps went up to 0-76c, 1-75c, 2-73c, 3-74c after Prime95 running for 45 mins. Core 0 always seemed to run higher than the rest. The idle temps were about 43c. ( I didn't have time to let Prime run longer ). They still seem on the high side to me.
seems fine to me. mine idles at 35-40C and under load its around 65-75C all depending on my room temp of course. Edit - i have a corasir H50
Also sounds pretty fine to me. My 3.8 GHz 920 hits around the ~75+ degree mark at full 8-thread load.
make sure voltages are set collectly and you will gain a few c less 35 idle 50-60 under load is nothing to worry about 70-80 at 4ghz is a normal temp under load if you leave speed steping enabled you can get it to drop alot when not been used though
Your temps seem fairly normal at 3.8 GHZ so I wouldn't worry too much. I use one of these: Its a Cogage Arrow. Its a big beastie but does a first class job of cooling. I fitted two Akasa 120mm fans to it and they run at 1100rpm off a Scythe fan controller. The temps are good as well after running prime95 (with Hyperthreading on):
I think its more to do with using only 1.24v for 4GHz. Most people need 1.3v+ and thats when their temperature rise above 70c.
I did have it at 1.3v initially but kept bringing the voltage down till it became unstable and then brought it up a fraction. Even at 1.3v it was only a few degrees warmer (the hottest core was high 60's celcius). But getting back on track, as I said angel_dust your temps seem o.k.
