    Hi guys,

Could you build me a spec for an ideal home network. The main uses will be:

    - Streaming media (movies, music, and pics) around the house
    - Backing up hard drive contents from 2 laptops, one PC (with another one on the way)
    - Security (looking to install a few IP camera into the network as well)

The budget is around the £1000 mark flexible within reason, but as close as possible to the £1k mark)

    Thanks for your help,

    Sunny :thumb:

£1k for a LAN. At home. :jawdrop:

What sort of kit do you want? Consumer (netgear etc) or big iron (cisco) stuff? Consumer will be cheaper and allow for more money to be spent on a NAS/HTPC.

looking at a gigabyte switch with POE for IP cameras (im a CCTV technician) + additioal ports for PC/ NAS etc.

    something like this:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204455

this will do 4 POE and 4 standard all at 1Gb

or if you need more devices connected as you didint specify

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135647

Was thinking a 1-4TB NAS to make backups for devices

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225067
2x http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190145 or 1TB version if you need less space.

    EDIT- forgot

IP cameras are where your costs at. you looking for anlogue cameras that have IP interface or 1.3M cams, 3M cams or 5M cams ?

id say on your budget your limited to 1.3M if your looking for more than 1

PM for prices as our suppliers are trade ONLY - sorry i cant recommend a good retail site for IP cams as i dont use them

:) I'm after mostly consumer grade kit, because I will be needing a large amount of storage.
The networks going to act as a media streaming platform, where movies and music can be streamed anywhere around the house (on laptops, PC's, and even on the PS3).

For that kind of money I would look at a gigabit backbone, wireless n specification and perhaps even get some trunking in place for patch ports located around the house? With that kind of money you could make a really neat, professional job of it too.

I think the 4 PoE should be sufficient

As for the storage, 4tb nas should be fine (for back-ups and media), and if i need more i can easily add additional HDDs to the network right?

In terms of IP cameras, I'm going to need one, maybe two (one for the front of the house and one at the back). I have no idea what would work best, so what do you think I should be looking at getting if its for basic home surveillance/security?

    Thanks for your help mate,
    Sunny

Could you post up a link to the components required.

I haven't really built a home network before (plenty of systems and rigs though :)) so need everything spelled out to begin with :(

for professional ones your looking £300+ per camera but these are from proper Camera companies and are vandal domes with IR with variable lens usually around 3.6mm-22mm depending on what you need.

try this you wont see a price but this is a simple professional IP camera.

they are nothing like the silly ones you get at maplin for £80

damn. just thinking out aloud, if genie are your suppliers, would it not be possible to get an IP camera directly from you?

as for the rest of the kit can help on the forum no prob.

    dont forget about cabling too

pretty easy to use you 1K budget up to be honest if you have some good IP cameras.

im just pretty sure you cant pitch business on the forums so it would have to be done private msg.
