Okay, what hardware are you planning on powering? Also, can you post a link to the PSU alone, not in a basket.
Sorry I though it would be useful to see the parts it would be powering. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/400W...ies-PSU-ATX-PS-2-80plus-Efficiency-UK-Version LN22762 Antec 300 Three Hundred, Black Midi Tower Ultimate Gaming Case w/o PSU LN24874 400W Corsair CMPSU-400CXUK Power Series PSU, ATX, PS/2, 80+ Efficiency, UK Version LN25351 Samsung SH-S222A/BEBE 22x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, DVD-RAM x12, IDE Black OEM LN26734 500 GB Samsung HD502HI EcoGreen F2, SATA 3Gb/s, 5400rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ LN28632 Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro v2.1 - S1366/S1156/S775/AM3/AM2+/AM2/939 Up to 130 Watts! It should be okay but I would suggest going for a 500W instead. Oh and I would go for some 1600MHz RAM instead of 1333, they cost practically the same
Yeah me neither, I had a look at it and it listed the ones it could do, but then at 1600MHz It has an * after it.
Just about any time you get 1600mhz memory, you're going to have to overclock to make full use of it. If you just grab whatever high mhz memory is on the shelf, the memory's just going to underclock itself to whatever your cpu is at. There's all this math and junk to figure out exactly what the memory is going at for what fsb/multiplier speed you have, but the main thing is that just about every time you purchance 1600mhz memory or higher you need to overclock to make the most of it. You might also want to get a better mobo because if you get 1600mhz memory now and that same mobo, you won't be able to upgrade your memory in the future. Same could go for the psu. Your system could live off the one you posted, but if you expect to sli/crossfire upgrade in the future you're probably gonna need a stronger psu. Also, that HDD is only 5400rpm and while rpm isn't EXACTLY proportional to data transfer speed, it's likely to be slower than a 7200rpm HDD.
Thats the best I can do really at the moment. I can't be spending any more really, is there anyway I could get anything better for my money then? Will I need to get a 500w PSU then?
It depends on whether you're going to be overclocking that CPU. The Phenom II's get a bit power hungry when overclocked. Still, even then a 400W will handle it fine, so long as you stick to good quality models as you are doing. The reason you'd want to get a more powerful PSU is that a 500W+ PSU would be running in it's comfort zone rather than close to its peak load, giving you better effciency, less heat and less fan noise. My 430W PSU was pretty loud compared to the other components in my machine before I upgraded it, though obviously only when the CPU/GPU were under load and drawing lots of power. If you're not overclocking your CPU more than a few percent and don't intend on adding a second graphics card etc then a 400W will do just fine.
I'm the friend the OP referred to. From what I gather the MSI 770-C45 is only certified to handle 125W CPUs, which the 955 is, so surely that would mean there isn't any overhead for an overclock?
