used to be able to print fine on my desktop ( running windows 7) but then all of a sudden i can not, i always am getting errors that are apparently fixable if i delete the print job.... but it nevers solves anything, there is nothing wrong with the printer as it prints fine from the laptop ( whether connected via ethernet or usb) ive reinstalled windows and still same problems.

Might have multiple instances of the same printer ie for me i had:

    Epson
    Epson(Copy 1)

The second one was my when i installed it again by accident but the first one is the one with USB dot4 capability driver and the computer set to default the one driver (copy 2) that was playing dead over USB

Just delete multiple or try setting to default other printers and running test sheet.

If it is a network printer then it may have problems with the drivers

For reference what is the model of the printer?

hi guys, not at home at mo so going from memory, but i did unistall and reinstall drivers and it only appears once in the printers list.

its a hp photosmart c5180 connected via usb. ( although it also will print if i install it to use the networked printer downstairs of same model) their never installed at same time cos i usually use my own.

if i remember i got no error flags in device manager. just whenever i print i get an error flag up by the printer and n its properties menu.

    thanks again,

Is the networked printer downstairs turned on but not installed normally? If your printer of the same model works when you install the networked one, it sounds like some kind of conflict between the two or with the network- have you tried making sure the other printer is neither installed or connected before trying your one? I'd be inclined to fiddle with cables and networking until it worked, theres usually a solution to be arrived at by using that method... :D

yeah ive never had them connected up at the same time and to make sure there wasnt a conflict deleted the downstairs printer so only the usb one was installed, yet sitll the problem persists.

if i unistall the usb printer and install the network one then i still get the same problem.

the printers work fine over network and usb with every other computer in the house including 2 others with windows 7.

thanks for the help though. might contiune to fiddle aorund and see if some solution pops out

You can try to update the driver on the desktop or try disabling the anti-virus or firewall of the computer.

I have nothing but trouble keeping our HP C6180 network printer working with three Win 7 64-bit computers on the LAN. Some of the trouble was due to a faulty USB cable, which of course was no fault of the printer's. Mostly, though, the printer just quits working with one or another of the computers. I then go through a process of deleting the printer from that computer's devices, then re-adding it.

Part way through re-adding the printer I'm confronted with the question about "sharing" this networked printer. This question has never made much sense to me, and I've tried it both ways. If I say to share it, then the printer shows up on the other computers as being connected to the sharing computer, so now I mostly say not to share - the printer is connected directly to the router by its own USB cable (which the software already knows because I told it so earlier in the process). But deleting and re-adding the printer often seems to get printing going again. Oh, and this is with the latest edition of HP software, drivers and all.

Most recent problem: printer worked from my usual computer when tested or sent a picture to print from a photo editor, but absolutely refused to print a pdf file using either Adobe Reader or a freeware pdf reader. One of these days when I'm feeling wealthy I may buy a new printer just to try to avoid the annoyance.

    try restarting the spooler

sometimes the spooler hangs, and just needs restarting.

on windows 7, type 'services' without quotes into the search box click the one that likes like a big and small cog.
look for 'Print Spooler' click it once, then look for restart to the left under the heading of print spooler.

wait a few seconds, then try printing again

Try to use older drivers, the latest one may have bugs.
