Horus Heresy is good, if you have some knowledge of 40k. 30k is tough to just jump into without some knowledge of what's going on in the current setting. :)

Storm of Iron is one of my favorite books, really should be made into a movie!!!! And the Ultramarines were the biggest legion, but are now broken into chapters, so they have the most sub chapters...

All Astartes are "The Emperor's Chosen" The Ultramarines are just generic Codex Chapter number 201 or 101 in their case as Robutte Guill... French Primarch made all the Legions break up etc...

I'm fairly sure they're no stronger, infact they're weaker because of all the battles. The thing that makes them unique is that each "successor chapter" from them retains the Ultramarine thing... so if Ultramar was attacked they'd all come screaming (and crying) back.

Alpha legion are a funny sort. During the Horus Heresy they were visited by a group of Xeno's calling themselves "The Cabal", basically they used a farseer of the Eldar (and others) to check for things in the future. For example, they forsor the Horus Heresy and asked Alpharius Omegon (The Primarch(s)) of the Alpha Legion to side with Horus to once and for all destroy Chaos (I.e. Destroy Humanity and The Eldar... as they've got the heaviest infulence in The Warp... I'll elaborate in a moment) They did as were told. HOWEVER, this does not listen them as Traitors technically, they're doing the best thing for the Galaxy right? The Imperium however see them as traitors and always will... many of them have become taited with Chaos and become possessed etc... but not all of them.

The basis behind the Alpha Legion is one of suspicious and mis-trust, a lie upon lie upon lie upon a fact that was a lie. They're very good at spreading mistrust and doing the opposite to what a Legion would expect etc... I can't think of the word right now.

They have 2 Primarch's Alpharius and Omegon, who as one actually hold the title of Primarch, but they are twin's by genetic default... The Emperor in his Wisdom doesn't actually know about that.

Your best bet for Space Marine books is THe Horus Heresy to start off with, so you have a basis, Then move onto books on your favorite chapter (I personally like the Imperial Fists and Word Bearers) but then just start picking up other ones.

If you want 40K books I suggest Dan Abnett's Gaunts Ghosts... They're fantastic, As are the Ravenor and Eisenhorn Triology of the Ordo Xeno's.

Don't worry, I'm listen you as "Heretic". Stand where you are citizen, an Inquisitor will be along shortly to burn your genepool out of existance.

I reread all of the Gaunts Ghosts books last year in 2 months so I could be up to date to real Blood Pact :p And I'm on my 4th (or 5th) reread of Ravenor Rogue right now. Pitty about Dan Abnett's epilepsy hitting so hard like that :(

Id recommend that everyone gets a physical disk version because they usually register with steam anyway so you get it cheaper, its still on steam, and you have a disk just incase anything happens

I've never been a great fan of Mr Abnett's writting, but Ravenor and Eisenhorn are some of the best books I've read in a very long time. Ravenor especially, I'm tempted to get the logo tattoo'd on me actually (see the front of the book). I do hope he does get sorted quick as poss mind :/

I prefer Graham McNiel's writing if I'm perfectly honest. Debski-Brown also has earnt himself the respect after I've just put down "Helsreach" and it's awesome!

cannot understand why a fullblown film has not been made on 40K yet... it would make squilleions!

[i enjoyed the Ultramarine film but 40K can do better]

I noticed on the steam ad it says "Choose to build a massive army or lead your small squad of elite heroes into battle"

Does that mean there might be the possibility that they are moving back to DOW1 style gameplay?

DOW 1 was for me completed by the massive mod scene that really allows you to get into the game and customize it to suit you, I have wasted days and weeks customising the game to fit with the gameplay style I wanted, yet to get chaos rising for dow2 as I didn't find it quite so captivating can't wait for space marine though even if it has pox ultamarines.

The real question all 40k addicts love is what happened to the squats? I love the older manuals etc that have them in and have been glossed over by GW in there desire to have a more serious storyline.

Been reading all this with growing interest, somehow and i dont know how, i managed to progress through my geeky life without taking a serious interest in warhammer.

Is there a book out that gives you a general feel for it all? I rather not delve head first into 1 group of books without knowing more about it all on a whole.

Me thinks i found something new im going to be rather engrossed in...

Use the GW website and look through the online store for free downloads regarding background articles and some free rulebooks (Specialist games mainly).

There are loads of sites with info as well, I'm sure BRAWL can put you in the right direction for fluff.

    Also:
Happy Days. I'll be pre-ordering the Collectors ed at some stage anyway soon. If I get any money, I'll do it before the 1st of Feb, but unlikely.

You're very right, something based on a Tau / Ultramarine war would be fantastic right?

Go read up on Lexicanum online what a Space Marine is... you'll be swallowed whole.

THQ say: “The beta is scheduled to go live on Monday 31 January when global press and key Dawn of War® community members will be given access. It will then broaden to include everyone who has pre-ordered Dawn of War® II – Retribution™ on STEAM to date on 1 February. Finally, anyone who has bought a Dawn of War game through STEAM or has registered a Dawn of War II product on their STEAM account will automatically receive an invite on 8 February. There will be no open registration phase to this beta.”

Yay, that means I'll get to try this out on Feb 8th to see if its more to my liking than the other DOW2s.

The actual game comes out on my birthday!
