So everything have finally arrived! New case, PSU, the motherboard, CPUz and Memory + extras.

Really was looking forward to this micro project, I have not had a good 'ld tinker for ages, i dont think I will get much from it for F@H - but hey everypoint counts?

First thing I did was the get power to the board and see if it work (ebay purchase) and it did, I did notice however that the CPUs where HOT HOT HOT idleing around 50dc. BUt I have read about this online on forums so I knew the older coolers struggled with this CPUs. Secondly I knew the NB was also a fast, the heatskin was useless. Took some advise from the MSI forums and got me a, well, rather "understated" northbridge cooler :)

Thought, now I am a member of this really GOOD forum, that for once I would take photos and post them. Not done it before in this way - always just been for me.

I am a bit of a perfectionist so took me ages. Cable management is yet to be completed, and rest for HDs to be installed, but next week or so I will sort that out.

    Enjoy

The new MEATY single rail PSU (see my other post)

New Heatskins and fans + NB cooler - thanks Scan
    [IMG]

The board out of the box from eBay, boosting two old Thermaltake 939 coolers and that rather sad looking NB cooler
    [IMG]

The mess I found under the CPUs
    [IMG]

Close up for naked NB and give you a idea of how much dust we have
    [IMG]

Not too long we had some text visable on the CPUs - that is more like it
    [IMG]

    I even hate warranty stickers...

Found some older AS5, I know there is better stuff now, but it is still good and needed using up - ive always been a spreader!

    Heatskins ON
    [IMG]

    Fans ON
    [IMG]

NB AC5'd, padded and screwed, ready for takeoff
    [IMG]

New NB heatskin in place (took some tinkering i can tell you)

Fan on NB, dust removed, clean up done
    [IMG]

Ekk more $$$$ing cables - I dont was eSATA, I dont want USB, I DONT WANT!

    Gone
    [IMG]

    Main board in
    [IMG]

The case and the PSU installed - OMG I HATE CABLES!

    So far so good

I've one of these, have you replaced the BIOS with an 8MB one for quad support, or simply running duals?

Also, it's REALLY picky with video cards, careful that it supports what you want. Last cards it supports in SLI are 7900GTX.

Not got the BIOS replaced yet, will see how things progress, two dual core 2212 at the moment. However the lastest 2.00 BIOS fully support Shanghai quad cores, as the barcelona cores that get enabled in the 8mb upgrade loose some features, so I am not sure how to move on that one.

I can get 2 2.4 quads for £120.00 - that is not for a while yet.

No GFX going in there, just an LSI Megaraid SAS/SATA controller and some more NICs

I paid £98.00 + 8p&p for the Mobo, CPUs (and the coolers that came with it) and 8gb DDR2 ECC memory (4x2)

Thought it was a bargin and was what started the whole project!

OK so here we are, got the new bits I needed to get all the drives in and the power converters for the enclosures. My new Backup server and folding rig is ready.

Installation of the enclosures, I was able to reattached the fan on the top one, but the bottom will have to live without. Under load the drives dont get hotter than 35dc at the moment, so no problems there.

Time to install raid card, those Mini SAS cables dont like to be bent, I would have loved to tuck them away but it is just a no-no. All patched into the enclosures.

Power installed onto the enclosures, the GX650 only have one molex power, not wanting to one load a single cable with 6 drives and 2 enclosure and giving an element of redundancy on the power feed, I opted to buy some SATA to Molex converters and split them between the enclosures - worked well.

Front view and a sneaky peak at the mess behind the mobo tray

Raid array, ready but just completing the background int. will take a couple of days :)

Once this is done I will post my HD tune results and F@H result :)

Wow. That was a bargain. The DDR2 would go for near that and them 212 hyper HSF are great.

Also, could you put down a list of all the parts you used.

A project like this looks ideal for what I want to do which is a media server/folding rigI have a capable case I would have thought, soon to have a PSU and hopefully soon to have a couple graphics cards, so a bundl;e like what you found is what I really want!

Just so you know, there are no folding capable cards that will work in SLi with this board. My K9ND and I get in arguments constantly over that fact.

Also, I have that card's big brother, the SRCSAS18E. It's mighty nice.

I thought you didn't have to run them in SLi for folding?

I thought you could just add in and other card for folding and just run a client off it too. Or am I just being dumb

Can any 8 series card and above fold?
