That would be a ridiculous waste of money and power in my opinion. Without going into the merits and drawbacks of physx, considering the 560 is almost overpowered fro most games at 1920x1080 it would be completely wasted as a PhysX card. Something like a £50 Ebay GTS 250 would be more than enough for PhysX.

In the search bar (top right) under ATI Radeon HD 6950 Review

    or

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2010/12/16/ati-radeon-hd-6950-review/1

Card looks very nice but is rougly equal in performance to the 6950 at the settings i'm going to be using (1920x1080 4x aa 16x af) which uses less power at load, that extra 30w might be the tipping point for my corsair HX520w psu to handle along with an overclocked Yorkfield Quad core.

I do some of the new radeons features also like the morphological antialiasing but then there CUDA.. haha it's a tricky decision even with all the information handed to you on a plate.

Is it me, or are the graphs in this review kinda skewed?

For instance, the "Power consumption (idle)" graph, the 560 has a consumption of 135, and yet is listed underneath the two ATi Radeons (5870 & 5850) that have consumption of 136

In the "Overclocking" graphs, the 560 is in the middle slot, even when, in all three graphs, the minimum frame-rate is higher, and in the first two, the maximum is also higher.

Agree about using the 560 as a PhysX card but I'd still use a 260 or upwards when paired with a 580 - otherwise you'll be holding the 580 back.

True ...BUT... point me in the direction of a game that necessitates a gpu upgrade! Anyone currently running a 4890/275 or higher has no discernible reason to spend the money ...yet.

Now I have a beef with Bit-Tech. In the not-so-comprehensive January Buyers Guide you put this...

"At the top of this list is a not-so-secret graphics card launch that we’re expecting early next week, which promises to make most cards in the £150 to £220 price bracket seem utterly archaic."

Was this referring to the 560? Because it clearly, singularly fails render any competing nvidia/amd card "archaic". Surely such flowery hyperbole won't be justified til 28nm, later this year?

People are saying bios switch the 6950 to a 6970 but this overclocks to Gtx 570 levels, which has better performance than a 6970. This card is impressive

it depends on your resolution. i had 5870 and it is struggling with most games i try to play. obviously at 1680x1050, you should see no reason to upgrade just yet.

again, 28nm high end won't be this year, did you read the post you quoted?

i can confirm Pete J's comment. my 8800GT is not a good complement for gtx580.

I have a 4890 my new monitors resolution of 1920x1080 is making Aliens Vs Predator, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Bad Company 2 chug a little more than I'd like, plus turning up the eye candy on F1 2010 would be nice. DX11 with faster framerates and a cooler running card than my current one.. sounds good to me.

Uhhm, I'm itching to buy a new card but at 245 euros for an EVGA GTX 560 Ti here in Spain, I think I'll still hold out a little longer as, compared to the excellent Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1GB at 179 euros, it still seems a little too pricey for me at the moment.

I read that as "I bought this gear and want to show off!"

You've been recommended by the way that a gtx 260 is enough for physx when paired with a 580, by a bloke with tri-sli 580's and a 30" monitor so heed his advice!

On-topic: Card looks excellent, the question is now what will happen to the gtx 460 prices, both new and second hand :worried:

Any inklings of a 768mb version?

It seems my HD5870 is going to be my "8800GTX" for a while... The GPU market estagnated :/

Color me not impressed. I'd rather go with a 6870 at 1920x1200 or a 6950 2GB/GTX 570 at 2560x1600. This card offers a tiny benefit over the former and hefty performance deficit compared to the latter.

Nice card, but looks like my 5870 is hanging in there.

The 560 has had the effect of stirring up the sub-£200 market, with the 1GB 6950 on the way and price drops for the 2GB 6950 and 6970. Will be interesting to see how Nvidia respond with the pricing of the 560 and 570 in the next few weeks.

    Interesting comparison from Hardware Canucks:

"Even though the choice between the HD 6950 1GB and GTX 560 Ti will likely come down to personal preference, AMD’s new card displays both strengths and weaknesses. At 1920 and 1680 even a slight price premium over its NVIDIA counterpart is simply too much since performance stays neck and neck through every test. Overall power consumption and noise levels are also two areas where the HD 6950 1GB loses out as it seems like removing 1GB of memory had very little impact upon overall efficiency. Also, don’t expect it to reach the absolutely stratospheric overclocks most will be able to attain with the GTX 560.

On the positive side of things, regardless of the similarities in framebuffer size, the HD 6950 1GB has more top-end power than the GTX 560 Ti which allows it to take a commanding lead at extremely high resolutions and image quality settings. Some will correctly argue that sub-$300 graphics cards won’t be used for these types of scenarios but the benefits of AMD’s huge memory bandwidth are undeniable. "

The biggest difference between the 6870 and the 560 that I could see was in 1920x1200 tests with AA on, but the increase was a mere 10%. I'd agree that this doesn't count as making other cards seem utterly archaic.

Worth postponing the January Buyers Guide for? I think maybe not.
