On the assumption that we will be invited to take part in the Chimps Challenge this year, is it too early to think about recruiting for the team?

To get a piece in the magazine probably needs a bit of forethought, and as the challenge starts in early May, we need a piece in the issue that actually comes out in April (even though it will be called by a later month's name). And if CPC reviews new graphics cards, a mention of folding and the Challenge in that review may help.

There have been lots of newcomers to the team in recent months, getting high scores, who may like to join in. If you've looked at the team statistics and wondered who CPChimps and CustomBitChimps were, and why they stopped at 20,000,000 points, those are our previous challenge names.

The Chimps challenge is basically a race between top teams, all starting at the same time, toward a set number of points (last year it was twenty million). All the participants in each team switch to folding under the same name and team number (and for SMP, the same passkey). In our first year (2009) we made a heroic effort to turn defeat into a moral victory. In 2010 a last minute dash helped us overtake maximum_monkey to take fifth place; monkey_bollocks were the heroic last place holders. The reality is that we are most unlikely to be the winners, as some other teams will have far more people and machines, but we take part in good faith (with no bribery, prizes, or sabotage) and with a commitment to seeing it through to the end.

Last year's stats are available here and googling 'Chimps Challenge' will bring up all the forum posts from ourselves and other teams, so you can see what to expect.

I might get my i5 folding for you this year. I think it might be worth creating an idiots guide closer to the time to get people up and running as soon as possible.

I would definitely be up for this and would fold 24/7 for the duration. Should be able to generate >55K PPD without problem providing the pesky internet connection stays up (fell over for 4 hrs today) :grr:

Your 980x would be most efficient when running a single SMP client crunching bigadv WUs G0UDG, of course you can run a couple of GPU clients alongside that for maximum points from one system.
