Dear All, I have a company laptop which I take on frequent business trips. Can't afford a gaming laptop at the moment so I am looking for decent games that will work. I know it will run Zeit, Plants V Zombies, Half Life (original), Wolfenstein 3D. Any classics that you can think of or simple modern games that would run? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
It's a Dell Latitude by the way, with a Core 2 Duo U9600 CPU (2x1.6GHz), 3gb DDR3, 64gb SSD, Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD and a 1280x800 display. It's a crappy business machine I know, but I should be able to wrangle some fun out of the thing!
You should be able to play the old Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale games quite nicely. My friend has a similar laptop and can run Call of Duty 1 & 2 quite easily as well. The original F.E.A.R should work as well, should be around 30-40fps on low-medium settings. CS Source should run well too. Age of Empires 2 is another one that'll run fine if you're after some RTS. The Hitman series should also be pretty much fine to run, Battlefield 2 should run on medium settings. Also, if you're into MMO games. Most of them should run pretty well on that chip. Edit: Oh, almost forgot. Following megadriveguy's recommendations, the majority of Indie games on Steam should run like a treat.
Yeah, I'd say you could have a decent game of Battlefield 2, Counter Strike: Source. I've been getting back into COD 2 recently that should run like a treat. Generally older games will run fine, like some Lara Croft Tomb Raiders if you like those. Serious Sam (HD) is a quality game that should run great on lower settings! Good mindless shooter, that.
After the updates to CSS you might have some trouble running it, it's worth a try though. Battlefield 2 is a good idea, it ought to run fairly well. My suggestions would be Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament, it may manage UT2004 too. Give C&C a shot too, the new games scale down quite well graphics wise and you still get the awesome gameplay. GTA games up to San Andreas should run alright as well.
+1 rep to everyone who added their recommendations, they are appreciated. I have already ordered what I can through steam (world of goo, machinarium and braid) and I will look to ebay for the rest next time I am home. Thanks again
i've seen minecraft running successfully on some pretty low spec laptops once some of the graphics "options" were culled!
Some free ones, Spelunky Dwarf Fortress OpenTTD ZangbandTk or other roguealikes I've read the following will all work on the GMA950 in netbooks, but haven't got one myself to verify... Peggle Audiosurf XCOM Baldurs Gate Planescape Torment Uplink Civ 3 Alpha Centauri Fallout Fallout 2 and lots of other stuff from gog.com And I think these might work on low settings, but I'd try the demos first to make sure, (I think they all have demos on steam) Gal Civ 2 Torchlight Civ 4 Rome: Total War Maybe some other quake3 engine games would work ok too, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Knight II, Deus Ex, etc.
Highly recommend Plants vs Zombies. Any old classic RTS, I'm getting back into pharaoh again. Monkey Island games, so good, trying to work my through them atm, and will certainly run on your laptop.
A lot of strategy game would run as long as they don't have fancy RTS bits. http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forum.php Well worth a look.
