Graphics GTX460 or 6850 ?

Hi all,

Seen 2 nice looking graphics cards : Looking for any recomendations.

1st) 1GB Palit GeForce GTX 460 : 3600mhz DDR5 / GPU 700mhz / Shader 1400mhz.

or

2nd) Asus HD 6850 OC : 4000mhz DDR5 / GPU 790mhz.

Both have HDMI that I want (hooking upto HDTV), both are same price.

CPU is an AMD X3 450 at clock speeds.

those palit cards have been getting hammered in customer reviews(noise, quality). i'd be wary. the sonic platinum seems to be a good card, though not sure what the real differences are other than the factory oc. doubt it's the platinum ur looking at anyway. performance-wise the gtx 460 is the card to get in this scenario, but again, that palit is getting bad reviews.

 

What price you seen them at?

 

If you go with the GTX460 get one with a non standard cooler or invest in a new cooler the stock one wails like a banshee that's being sucked up a hoover gentleman sausage first

Back on topic: I'd recommend the 460.

 

I recommend the 460. Mines near silent with the stock cooler. And powerful to boot.

 

460 has better performance but runs hotter and louder than a 6850
I'd go for the 460 if they are both the same price.

 

HD6850, well whichever one's cheaper. I have sapphire's and it's quite quiet, and OC's like a champ.

Mind you it's a potshot, but a GTX460 OC'ed while faster, is actually hotter and more power consuming if you wanted to know.

Plus the HD6850 gets slightly better minimum framerates. Although I have owner's bias.

 

Theres not much to choose between them - they are both fantastic cards.

 

Palit decided not to include a heatsink on their 460's VRMs after they initially sent out the smaples with heatsinks to reviewers. The fan needs to pick up in order to keep them cool.

I would try to find an alternative 460; if not then the 6850.

For Sketchee : The cost of the 6850 OC is £144 / GTX 460 is £142.

Got another week to decide yet but Im leaning towards the 6850 OC.

Both pretty good cards i think the 460 has the upper hand, novatech do a overclocked 6850 for £137 that turned out to be the powercolor premium edition with non ref cooler, i was very impressed with it, on my i7 920 @3.8 ghz it scored 22000 in 3dmark06

 

For the price of that palit card you might find a gigabyte or msi hawk 460. Both are cracking cards, the dual fan cooler seems to keep things cool and v. quiet

 

I would go with the 6850 as I have heard nothing but problems with the plait 460GTX's. If it was a gigabyte 460GTX or MSI I would probably lean towards the 460GTX.
