Having staticly electrocuted my previous motherboard, I bought a new one. It was difficult to find one with more than one IDE slot (at a decent price) so I opted for a converter. (Bigger pic here.)

The BIOS doesn't see any disks, though. Of course the things didn't come with any manual or guide or slightest explication on the packaging.

I've tried connecting them in these fashions:

    - SATA data cable + power plugged into HD
    - SATA data cable + power plugged into converter (via conversion cable)
    - SATA data cable + power plugged into converter + power plugged into HD

I get absolutely no result. What am I doing wrong?

Do the controllers need to be in legacy IDE mode rather than AHCI? That'd be my best guess.

Check your drive has the jumpers set to master, also.

I've got 2 of those, you need both power connectors plugged in. Does it light up when you plug in and switch on? it should light up whenever there is disk access.

How have you connected the IDE drive to the cable?

Another thing to check is that the disks are set as master. If that doesn't work, set them to slave, if that doesn't work try cable select :D

I'd just go with cable select for now, saves faffing about, if it doesn't work then try master and slave, but bear in mind for Master (or cable select master) you'll need to make sure the blue end is plugged into the motherboard and the other end is plugged into the adapter.

the middle plug should only be used for slave (or cable select slave)

I think you missed the point of the IDE to SATA controller.

Thanks for your replies. The disks are indeed set to Cable Select.

They light up in a soothing orange colour. The BIOS just doesn't see them. I have them on an IDE cable now, and am (rather obviously) running the box without the DVD drive.

I don't really understand the last question. If you mean how I've connected it to the SATA cable: I've connected through the black connector on the converter.

Uhhm... I don't know. I've looked through the BIOS but see no such option. Then again, I'm fairly stupid when it comes to hardware (and many, many other things): that first sentence left me gasping for air.

I've got a couple of these, but never had much luck running them with the Drive set to Cable-Select. Have you tried the drive as Master?
