    Hi gang

I've had some concerns recently over Samsung Spinpoint hard disk drive failure rates and was hoping you'd be able to help me get a better idea of the rate at which these hard disks are failing. Obviously I'm a bit concerned having recommended them for so long.

So, if you've bought a Samsung Spinpoint hard disk drive in the last 3 years, please post below to let me know of your experiences. 5 drives and no worries? 1 drives and an RMA? I'm genuinely interested.

    Cheers in advance!

Currently have 6 disks spinning in various pc's. Never had an issue with any of them. Their age range from 3 months to 3 years. 3 of them get constant abuse in my NAS running 24/7.

I'd heard that the F1's had issues, a significant percentage had to be returned which was why I was wary about getting the F3, but I bought 2, one for me one for my m8 and they've both working fine at very low temps since late may.

3 x 320GB (I think these are Spinpoints from 2007 but have been retired)
    4 x 500GB F1
    1 x 750GB F1
    3 x 1TB F3

No failures so far. Out of all the different drives I've had in the last 18 years these (and a Connor) have been the most reliable.

Bought a 250GB Spinpoint (sorry can't remember the specifics) about 3 1/2 years ago that's still running fine but it vibrates harder than the back shelves in Ann Summers.

Bought a 500GB Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3 in January 2010 and it died yesterday.

Compared with my Hitachi Deskstar 160GB which has been running for 6 years now (albeit not quite as fast as the Sams).

    2006: 1 x 250GB P120 PATA - still going strong
    2007: 2 x 250GB P120 SATA - one DOA, RMA'd and both still going strong
    2008: 2 x 640GB F1 SATA - both still going strong
    2009: 3 x 500GB F3 SATA & 1 x 1TB F3 SATA - all still going strong
    2010: 5 x 1TB F3 SATA - all still going strong

I just know that now I have typed this, I will have a HD failure...

2 x 1TB F3 - One is 9 months old and the other roughly 12 months old - no issues so far.

Though if I am honest I would say the oldest drive seems to be quicker/perform better. Odd but there you go. Could be my imagination I suppose, my hardware has changed since I got the 1st drive.

1x250Gb F1 died just over 3 years old (typical)
1x750Gb F1 HD753LJ still going strong (again over 3 years old).

    Summary

    1 X F1 1Tb = OK
    1 X F3 1.5Tb = Broken within 3 months or so RMA'd
    1 X F3 1.5Tb = OK

    Detail

My F1 I have had no problems with

I had 1 F3 in my machine for a couple of months and it failed, and I RMA'd to samsung

I bought another F3 at the same time as the one I replaced which went it and thats seemed ok so far

Storage Review has been collecting hard drive reliability data for a long time. The results, including Samsung, can be found here.

We bought 10 F3's at the place I work...

8 of them failed within the first year.

Not sure if we just got a dodgy batch or what really.

I've had 2x250Gb, 2x1Tb (F1), 1x1Tb (F3), none have broken. admittedly they are probably more than 3 years old, apart from the F3.

I bought my first 1TB F3 in October of last year...and it gave up the ghost after a few days of use. RMA'ed it, and the replacement has been fine ever since (touches wood frantically)
