    Hi guys

    Quick and easy..

is my Graphics card dying ?

card in question is an NVIDIA 8800GTX

as you can see the screen is covered in lines and strange colours ??

I've updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers but this has not cured the problem...

Its my parents workhorse... they dont do much hardcore gaming so i can only presume the card has had enough and popped its clogs ...

    :D

Any advice would be much appreciated :D

Does the motherboard have an internal graphics adapter, so you can unplug the gpu and test it without it, so you can determine whether it is that or not?

If you can then try to reproduce the same problem in another PC with that graphics card.

Then if you do get the same problem and the card is out of warranty, strip the card bare and grab yourself a heat gun and reflux that solder. Otherwise the cheaper option is to use aluminium foil stand-offs and bung the card on a baking tray and cook it for about 15 minutes! Yes, I am serious :D

Hi mate, no the motherboard does not have an internal graphic adapter...

Motherboard in question is an NForce 680I SLI

    Too Bloody Pete

Hiya mate.. I haven't tried to roll back the driver, but its been running on the same driver for over a year or so.... Since the last time i formatted the pc, so its running the drivers from last summer.
I have updated to the latest however it is still not working correctly.

    FYI

I just loaded up CPU-Z and under the Graphics tab i have no information coming up at all....hmmm

    Too GregTheRotter:

Is that the case mate ? Lots of 8800GTX's dying off recently ??

Could they be coming to the end of their lifespan ?

Yep! To the oven! That'll fix it for sure!

    I've fixed 5x 8800GTXs doing exactly this!

IIRC it causes the solder to melt and flow again, which will fix any fractures or cracks in the solder that may be causing the issues you are experiencing it.

There's a lot of guides and videos on the internet about it so you might aswell try it.

You put it on a baking tray covered in foil and bake it at 180C for 10 mins

If you wanna be economical, you could bung a pizza in while your at it

Just be careful if you have had a few of whatever your poison is as you may end up over-Clocking a deep dish pepperoni and biting in to a GPU for your tea!:D

DO NOT COOK A PIZZA AT THE SAME TIME! :D

Joking aside the pizza would just add moisture to the mix which you don't want! A nice clean oven pre-heated nice and hot. Strip as many components off of the 8800 GTX as possible and then place on an aluminium wrapped baking tray. However it's an excellent idea to make four aluminium balls and stand off the graphics card from the baking tray to minimise the contact area. Ideally so the card is in the air as much as possible then I hear a bake of 10 - 15 minutes should do it. Don't take my word for it search the interneting first!
