Does it automatically update to the latest image? How do you configure that? It sounds awesome.

 

Yep, it updates to it every 30 minutes. The source updates their image every 15 minutes I believe so you can have it that short or longer depending on your preference (Although they are having a slight delay in images at the moment). I created a custom autohotkey script that grabs the image from their API and then sets it as your desktop. The great thing is that they have so many different spectrums of the sun, if I get bored of blue I can move over to something a little more familiar. If enough people like it I could make the script universal across computers so you can all have it.

 

That would be awesome. I know myself and the girl would have that instantly.

Excellent, but I almost Never see my desktop except at boot time. Too many work required windows open.

Now I need to hack this on to my home daily driver.

Well, for those that are interested I have started to make it universal but will probably be a little while longer. I shall try and do it this weekend but no promises.

I'm actually in talks with the developer of the source content, I have managed to get him to increase the maximum size from 1920*1080 to 1920*1200 which is good for 16:10 people like me. However for people over that size, I am afraid you will have to have a stretched image. He is also going to make the process alot simpler for me, by not making me convert from arc-seconds (some stupid scientific measurement) to pixels and just do it their end.

 

Source code would be awesome too.... I have 5 displays, I see 5 different suns.... the stars are turning in my mind if I can get a hold of that.

 

I must warn you all, it is much less interesting than I first imagined. I kinda forgot that the sun is massive. The movement in it is much less than I expected. For example one of those solar flares may take a good few hours to form.

And sure, I'll release the source code as well and you can all see how simple it is but how long it took me
I just did some quick research into making it work with multiple monitors, looks like the only way to get it to work is if I get some fancy code to join the multiple images together into a mega image. That would be a v2 release though

 

I honestly can't wait.
