Watched Thor on Bluray over the weekend. I think it's a great film. I love the mix of the alien world of Asgaard and Earth. It was different to what I was expecting in a good way. The story is very good with enjoyable characters, the action scenes are good, the visuals are amazing. It has a good throwaway comedy moments too like when Thor bursts into the pet shot saying "I need a horse" and also another favourite of mine is when the warriors 3 and the woman are walking down the street and the two SHIELD guys say "I got Xena, Jackie Chan and Robin Hood" made me crack up. All in all a very good film and I would give it 8/10 easily.
Watched The Vanishing on 7th Street, enjoyed the mystery aspect alot Also watched Horrible Bosses, funny film but Jennifer Aniston....wow
Since Xir mentioned it in another thread, I shall be re-watching these again. And since I know them, reviews: (T)Raumschiff Surprise Pe]riode 1 7.5/10 a gay parody on star trek (and I effing HATE Star Trek) is already pretty win. Now add one of Germany's good TV commedians (Michael "Bully" Herbig), and you have a movie that's funny, albeit in a quintessentially German way. Der Schuh des Manitu 8/10 Don't even bother with any language other than German. Humour is not translatable. This is another Herbig film and another Parody. This time playing off of Winnetou, probably THE great German western series of books (and films). Brilliantly making fun of Spaghetti Western cliches, gay jokes that can only possibly work in Germany.... good fun.
Unstoppable ( 2010 ) 7.5/10 Rather good film really, very simple to follow and some nice special effects/stunts. Will never be anywhere near as good as Runaway Train ( 9/10 ) but still perfectly enjoyable.
Battlestar Galactica 10/10 - Go watch it, all of it. Mini series, TV shows, movies and webisodes. GO RIGHT NOW!!!!
BentAnat... So you're one of those German speaking Namibian's (as opposed of one of the Dutch* speaking ones)? *gratiously classifying afrikaans as dutch If you also speak dutch you could try: Zwartboek (8/10) aka. Black BookIMHO one of the best dutch war-movies.
Born in Bremen, Mom's from Hamburg, Gran stays in Jülich, uncle in Aachen. I am actually a German speaking German citizen that resides in Namibia since he can remember. I speak Afrikaans as well, yes. It's inevitable around here. In my experience, Dutch and Afrikaans are quite different to listen to. Reading Duch is reasonably easy, but listening to it spoken is a bit more difficult. Flamish on the other hand... back on topic: The Borgias episode 1. Not sure/10
Watched Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. Beautiful film, very well shot and the sets are amazing but the story is so slow, dull and lacking in pointers which is a real shame.
I can't remember them so they can't be THAT gratuitous They are, I thought maybe afrikaans-speakers would do reasonably well hearing dutch. Then again, the other way round is quite hard...reading is easier I agree. I'm a Dutchman (from close to Aachen) and lived in Germany for nearly all my life.
Tron: Evolution 7/10 Not bad, though I can't say I remember much of the original film (beyond the art style). Effects weren't bad, (most of the neon costumes looked self lit rather the neon added as post processing (as in the original).
Finally watched Apocalypse Now, dunno how I've managed NOT to see it before. Wonder what I should see next, there are still a couple of films like this one that for one reason or another I've just never seen, even though I've meant to. 9/10.
The Mechanic (7/10) Solid Stathamesque action romp. Misses something that makes me go Wow though, but I can't put my finger on it...
Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon 7/10 Decent action film, though that new chick they have hired is ugly and can't act for **** :-/
Crash (9.5/10) Brilliant film that has so many of them moving moments with a perfectly crafted soundtrack that adds to a feel that seems so rare in films these days. A very strong contender for my favourite film. Outstanding.
I'm dutch, went to SA, and found afrikaans very difficult to really understand if spoken, Reading it is a piece of cake though. If you like that, look at any other movie that Paul Verhoeven ever made (bar Twister and Starship Troopers i guess). Especially the Raspberry-winning Showgirls and the dutch movie Turks Fruit" come to mind. Also, if you think our cinema has lots of tits in it, go watch some spanish cinema ('y tu mama Tambien' or Lucio y el Sexo' for example). That's just pure porn with good story and acting Go read the book by Alan Glynn, it has a much more decent ending. Almost everything else is identical, so all you really need is the last few chapters.
