    Totally false.

    Most 16:10 monitors are 1680x1050.
    Most 16:9 monitors are 1920x1080.

How you think it should be is totally irrelevant.

    It works like this!

1080 is HD, 1050 isn't. Not a fair comparison, that why we used x1200

edit: 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 have different horizontal count. So that gif is bound to show 16:10 as being narrower. It has nothing to do with aspect ratio and everything to do with using resolutions that are not properly comparable.

What you think is unfair is totally irrelevant.

1680x1050 is the most common resolution for 16:10 gamers.
1920x1080 is the most common resolution for 16:9 gamers.

Facts are irrelevant? LOL. You'll go far here at Bit Tech :)

What actual resolution people play it is not important, the fact remains that for any given resolution subset, i.e, 1680, 1920, 2560 etc... the 16:10 derivative has more vertical res.

Therefore if you have a choice between, for example, a 23" 16:9 screen and a 24" 16:10 screen, the 16:10 screen is obviously the wisest choice as it is a higher resolution screen.

Seriously dude.. what is your problem?

    LOL

You must be trolling.. no one is as stubborn and stupid as you are being right now.

    That graphic is wrong. Simple.

Let me guess... you have a 16:9 screen right? You bought it because you thought it was best, right?

    :)

Are we discussing resolution here or aspect ratio?

To buy 1920x1200 instead of 1920x1080 if you are into gaming is like paying extra to get a letterbox.

If you want higher resolution than 1920x1080, you obviously buy 2560x1440, not 1920x1200.

There are plenty of games that does not support 16:10 leaving 16:10 users with a letterbox like this.

    http://cdn1.wsgfmedia.com/forum/for...een-reports/15083/assassins-creed-brotherhood

    Some examples:

    2009
    Mirrors Edge

    2010
    Blacklight: Tango Down
WRC FIA World Rally Chamionship 2010

    2011
    Assassins Creed Brotherhood
    Alice: Madness returns
    Bastion
    Bulletstorm
    Driver: San Francisco
    Dungen Siege 3
    Dungeons
    Gatling Gears
    Ghostbusters: Sanctum Of Slime
    Limbo
    Monday Night Combat
    Ninja Blade
    Pro Evulotion Soccer 12
    Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
    Shank
    Splinter Cell: Conviction
Witcher 2 (Before patched after many months)

And if you use a 16:10 display and dont get a letterbox you have lost field of view (1) or have a deformed picture (2). All three scenarios are things you would like to avoid.

    1. Loss in Field Of View

Why avoid letterbox so badly, you dont notice it, its no worse than a bezel.

So in essence you get the same 1920x1080 res as a 16:9 screen in games but with a 16:10 you then get the added bonus of 120 extra vertical pixels whenever you are browsing the net or using word.

The fact that some games give you a letterbox format is not a problem? Most 16:10 screens are IPS and therefore they have great black levels which means the black letterbox parts will just appear to be extra bezel.

Btw - are you one of those people who buy MONSTER DVI cables because the image quality is better?

There is no reaso to buy 16:10 which is a wrong aspect ratio for games.

If 1920x1080 isnt enough buy 2560x1440. Stay 16:9!

Steve E. Do you walk into a party full of people you don't know and act like this? I don't think so. First of all, please talk with a little more respect.

Second of all, that gif is misleading. 1920 x 1200 shows the exact same image as 1920 x 1080 only with 120 extra vertical pixels. You see that 16 in the 16:9 and 16:10 - it represents 1920 in both aspect ratios. My IPS 1200p panel running in letterbox mode shows the exact same image as your 1080p panel running at full screen. Not only that but the image is better.

Most high quality panels are 1920 x 1200, most low quality screens are 1920 x 1080. This is because 16:9 screens are cheaper to manufacture. You are saving money buying a 1080p screen, but you are also losing vertical pixels. Coupled with the fact that IPS panels have far superior colours, black levels and clarity than any TN panel, you would be mad to knowingly buy a TN panel now that they can be had for similar prices. The only situation where I'd recommend it is if you really really want to try out 3D.

i'd just like to add do you not feel like looking through a tiny letterbox at 16:9 on RTS games?

i sure do, everything takes away a chunk of vertical space, your final view of battlefield is no bigger than:

You clearly dont understand how games works.

As I said the game will show the following Field Of View on your monitor (if the game support 16:10).
