I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the first Darkfall game. Way more scary and atmospheric than FEAR ever was imo.

Not that I play many scary games, but mine are Alone in the Dark (1992) and Gabriel Knight 2. Played alone, in the dark, with no distractions. :) I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that I clearly remember.

Many years ago, when Doom 2 was all the rage, some group made a mod for it called Alien Doom. This mod effectively turned Doom 2 into an alien horror-fest designed only to make you defecate into your pants.

I remember the first level the best; it was huge, and you spent ages getting to the exit. Not because the way there was particularly hard to find, but because you kept anticipating the aliens to jump out at you for every step you take. So you continually turn around, weave about and doing odd manouvers to make sure you're not surprised - and the whole time you're moving ever closer to the edge of your chair. And then you reach the exit - there were no aliens on the first level, and you made yourself crap your pants. Playing it at night with the lights off and the volume up didn't help of course...

That was my first experience with horror games, and none have even come close to this first taste of terror in computer games. I enjoyed The various Silent Hill games, but didn't find them particularly scary. F.E.A.R was scary, but in the instant-jump-off-your-chair-with-your-trigger-finger-crushing-the-left-mouse-button-on-instinct kind of way, and not the kind of scary that tickles the base of your spine whilst maintaining a firm hold on your daddybags ready to squeeze. And I could never get into Stalker because of all the bugs. Amnesia however, I haven't yet played...

System Shock 2, the sound was superb and the fact that you never had enough ammo and your gun was always on the brink of breaking and you could hear that midwife down the corridor always got me. Very few games have scared me as much as System Shock 2 did..... Ahh what i'd give for an updated version (with a slightly improved ending).

I was about to mention System Shock 2, about which my opinion is best expressed by a whey-faced shiver.

    "Remember Citadel!"

There are so many games that have distrubing moments, scary moments and fright moments. So amongst too many to mention:-

Disturbing - System Shock 2, the screaming monkeys..., Dead Space 2, killing the exploding babies really bothers me.

Scary - FEAR, the first time you meet Alma. Its the fleeting glimpses, the half heard sounds and ominous creaks that ratchet up the tension.

Fright - For me the one moment that gave me the biggest fright was near the start of FEAR when Fettel steps out from behind the air con unit on the roof and smacks you in the face with the plank. It really made me jump and let out a yelp which brought the wife upstairs to find out what was going on. The look of pity she gave me after I explained what happend still lingers in my mind even after all this time.

For me it will always be Dead Space. Brilliant, fantastic game, but scary as hell. Fear would be next. I also never finished Doom3 back in days, so that would be third I think. But Dead Space is the best, scariest game for me. Period.

The original AvP ...playing as Marine... the first time those xenomorphs come at ya you just can't help but think back to the movies and....!

And Dead Space for the first hour of that game ...quite chilling.

Games have never really bothered me. I done the achievement for Ravenholm (I think it was to do the whole town with only the gravity gun) at night with headphones and it was a bit unnerving.

    Downloading Amnesia on Steam now...

Definitely the Dead Space series... almost crapped my pants in part 1. Part 2 wasn't quite as scary but it still got my pulse up a fair good bit.

I did the same thing - having the entire first level without a single enemy was a stroke of genius, especially given Doom 2 was supposed to be a game full of enemies. I especially loved all the sound clips from the film as you made your way around.

Remember the level that began with the aliens falling through the ceiling? I remember not wanting to move (the drop was triggered by moving from the starting location) and just standing there refusing to budge.

Shame on you Mr. Martin. Your punishment is to attempt to play ROTH again at night with the sound up. You choose a date, and I'll get it working on DOSBOX and bring it round.

    Playing Pro Evo online:

The lag issues mean that however dominant you've been in a game you can never relax because at any moment the opposition might go on a stuttering run straight through (literally) your players, or a high ball will fall in your penalty area and you'll be desperately bashing buttons to clear the ball, but always with the threat that, again due to the lag, you're going to swipe a player's legs away and give away a penalty.

Last minute corners when you're holding on to a draw/narrow lead are just terrifying.

You know, I had forgotten about that particular feature, but thanks for reminding me ... I may never sleep again. Oh, but do you remember that level where you could "fall" through into the alien nest? The shafts through which you could fall were quite cleverly implemented as at the time it was not possible to stack corrodors on top of eachother. Each map was stretched along a plane, but there were teleporters...

I dont mind scary movies or games, but FEAR just scared the crap out of me, first the moment with the ladder then, i was playing away, headset on loud, lights off, till my brother sneak up on me, he just gone from the back and moved his head slowly next to mine! that was the scariest moment in my life, needed 2h to get myself down again.... that game just took you over, never enough Ammo, never enough med packs! always stop before going around the corner, and the most worse thing >> a little girl, running towards you on all four>>>> creeps me out<<< the warnings that something supernatural gona happen, not allways does, but you never know, it might be this time!!! Best horror shooter ever, best horror as such ever. Best ingame balance to keep your heart rate up at all times..
    Respect!

There are sooo many different horror games to choose from...which one to describe...lets see...

For me Resident Evil 4 stands out from the herd. It offers the gamer a unique blend of (for its day) movie quality gaming action sequences. Set 'somewhere' in europe, the game stars you as Leon Kennedy, (a man tasked with the rescue of the president's daughter) whom you control using a clumsy-but-fast motion that results in gameplay that can be both scary and exhilarating.
This pans out as the veritable horror-uncharted 2 of its time sporting a unique variation of gaming sequences intercut with QTE cutscenes rendered aesthetically giving Resident Evil 4 an artistic scary-yet-pleasing look.

Throughout the game you experience a combination of horror gaming elements including ...

A large number of parasitically possessed villagers who behave casually until you alert them to your presence causing them all to suddenly swear in Spanish breaking down doors to eat you!!!!!!

20ft cycloptic lord of the rings style mega-troll that requires such focus from you if you make an error - stomps you into salami bits

Raiders of the lost ark style boulder avoiding qte moments that require shark like reflexes

    Upgradable boom-sticker-y

Young teenage girl fleeing in terror

    A giant salamander

Dead space style body exploding yet squidgy with a side of spikey blade-y screamers.

The game CONSTANTLY wants you to die!!!!

Ultimately I managed to complete this game by which time I along with Leon, had overcome my fears and for a time worked as a treasure hunter and mercenary.

...."Phew finally.".... "what's this?" man sees copy of Deadspace 2.. . . ..

Alien vs Predator I hear is also very scary....I have played FEAR and although it makes me jump at certain points...scary?? nope no way...just jumpy...haven't played FEAR 2 or 3 though so maybe it has gotten scarier... :)

I've yet to play Amnesia but its in my to-do list on steam :)

I was searching through the thread until I found someone who said this.

Only game ever to keep me up at night, and that was from chickening out of moving from the first room as a marine. Never got anywhere, literally - freaking scary game, and I consider my scare threshold to be fairly mid-high!

Alines vs. Predator - Bogomips scariest game EVER!
