It costs the US Mint approximately 1.5 cents to make every 1 cent coin (and approximately 6 cents to make the nickel, worth 5 cents). This means that they lose money on every penny and nickel they produce - a total of $22million in 2009 alone.

    How about this...

The striped mittenfish, a deepwater species recently discovered in the Java Sea, can change its sex at will by turning its entire body inside out.

"Kalashnikov," as in the weapon of the same name, means "son of the kalach maker." Kalach is a traditional East Slavic bread used in many rituals within the culture.

The expression cooked "al dente" means "to the tooth." What this means is that the pasta should be somewhat firm, and offer some resistance to the tooth, but should also be tender

If you stop a microwave by opening the door, then close the door and continue the sequence, the turntable rotates the opposite way.

Dunno if it's all of them but i thought it was odd.

The weird thing is that I haven't seen a microwave without a rotating turntable since the first days of microwaves (at least every microwave I've owned since the 90s has one), and yet every microwave meal still insists that you need to take it out half way through and stir it - something which (I though) the turntable platter makes redundant...?

I think that is to make sure the liquid is evenly distributed as opposed to being cooked evenly

Always thought the rotating platter was because all the microwaves get "pumped in", for lack of a better term, from one side (look inside your own, you'll see a mesh section leading to an area behind the buttons and timer). By keeping the food rotating it helps prevent one side from getting warmer than the other.

The stirring is to ensure that your food is heated evenly. Blasting something with microwaves isn't quite perfect at getting heat into the center of things as they have a tendency to be absorbed by the outside of your meal which they come in contact with first.
