Gaming Space Hulk: Third Edition Review

We finally get to grips with the new edition of Space Hulk and find out what all the fuss is about.

I am gutted that I was very much taking a break from all things GW when this was released. The models are some of the best 'stealer and marine figures that have been released and I spent many hours playing the first edition and expansions. I may just have to save up and splash out some time.........

 

I managed to buy a copy of this 2 years ago when it was released as the special ed (10,000 copies made i think?) and I treasure it.
I'm 28 and the gameplay is still tense as hell. Like the article says, one false move and you'll end up desperately trying to hold on to some semblance of hope to win the game.
If you can find a copy for a reasonable price - get it! Great quality models, pieces are very well made, it's all there. Awesome.

 

Well the limited edition killed my chances of getting it, I certainly will not pay the profiteers £100+ for a copy of the game. It's a shame really, I do not understand the business decision here at all. If there is demand why not supply it?. By not supplying it, all GW have done is allow some people to make a quick buck off their own backs.

Either way I look at it it is their loss.

 

It is regrettable that it was a limited release. I paid €80 for mine on release and certainly do not regret it at all.

The quality of the minis is rather impressive to say the least, especially the ... wait, all of them are awesome.

I guess, as with many of their specialist range stuff, they're unsure about the uptake, so having it as a limited release helps to increase the interest and ensures sales. That being said, i hope they don't re-release Necromunda or any of the other proper specialist games in a similar manner. I'm still gutted over how they were just abandoned.

 

I remember playing this when it first came out back in the 90s, I really wish they'd bring Inquisitor and Battlefleet Gothic back.

 

I had the (MB Games) Space Crusade version back in the Nineties, which was slightly different in that it had Chaos Marines (including a dreadnought), Orks, Gretchin and Androids (early Necrons perhaps?) as well as Genestealers and was 4 player with 3 being different chapters of Space Marine (Imperial Fist, Ultramarines and Blood Angels) and the 4th player the Xenos (or dungeon master).

With the re-release I couldn't resist picking it up, it was worth it just for the mini's, some of the best examples of Termies I've seen.

I was undecided by this year's release (Dread Fleet, which I believe is still available), prefer 40k tbh.

 

Good game. I bitterly regret selling my 1st edition copy in a moment of student poverty. At least I kept hold of HeroQuest & all it's expansions.

 

Funnily enough, I have friends who work at GW, and asked about these limited runs as they've just done Dreadfleet. Its more of a move to get rid of the copies as quick as they can, previous games like Battlefleet gothic and Gorkamorka show that the games lose steam within a year or two, and expansion sales dwindle. So they do limited runs of the game and thats it, kinda guarentee's the income instead of having boxes lying round for months. The shops don't hold much stock at all, infact alot of stuff gets destroyed on site (if it doesn't sell, but room is needed) because its cheaper than sending it back to their HQ in Notts.

 

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of this, but I've been able to play a few times - a friend of mine did manage to snag a copy.

Its superb fun, although I would warn you to have plenty of space available - some of the mission boards are frikking *huge*

 

I actually think this is worth the £100 from the touts, although you'll have to swallow your pride to do it. The miniatures are simply amazing - I've never seen such an intricate amount of detail on plastic models. The board tiles are also really chunky and nicely made - they've got embossed bits and everything - much better than what you got in the original. This is basically by far the best edition ever of a classic board game, plus you can stick 40mm bases to the terminators and librarian and use them in 40K (at least, that's what I did). I really can't recommend this edition enough! I'm also going to use this opportunity to pimp my own painted set of the game.

 

While a good read - was there a reason to review something 2 years old AND you can't get anymore?

Try £180 including shipping for a new copy on eBay. Even a used copy is over £150. Ridiculous.

 

This game looks really fun. I'm a big fan of the Dawn of War series but sadly I'm a bit young and never got into the old tabletop games and model sets. Something like this seems really awesome for someone like me who would want to play something other than a PC game about 40K. Sadly the price just isn't right but maybe if there was a re-issue at a discount sometime in the future I'd wanna pick up a copy of this game. *crosses his fingers*

 

Hmm, maybe I should put my 1st edition on ebay
