Haven'tused software for a while. Are you using a laptop? Just, most routers have dyndns built in. I'd go there first if it'snot about portability.
www.dyndns.com The way this works is you setup a free account and download the updater to whichever computer you want to access. The updater tells dynDns whenever your IP address changes. DynDNS gives you a subdomain which you can use to access the constantly updated IP address. It works - I use it to route cameras over the internet for a security system.
I use ZoneEdit as my DNS and DDclient as my dynamic updater under Linux. I find ZoneEdit great, but configuring DDclient is a bit of a cluster**** with a lot of conflicting information out there. Once you get it going though, it works well. That's for Linux though, no idea about other OSes.
Some routers do have a dynamic dns client/updater built in. If yours does, see which sites it supports and maybe use it with one of those?
Yep. That's what I was getting at. You only need a client on the pc if it's mobile. And even then, if its truly mobile dns propagation will ruin your fun. Check router first. Even bt ones have a dyndns service last time I checked. Although they may only support one dyndns service.
They don't offer 'free' accounts anymore, however they do offer a free 14 day trial for their pro account, http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro-free-trial/ - by the look of the website it looks that you can cancel anytime before being charged and still keep 1 domain, so still free but a bit of a pain. On the other hand, could use http://www.no-ip.com if your router supports which is still free.
dyndns is free for up to 25 names i think then you must have the pro package and pay for additional IPs.
Awesome. And using the router is much better in my opinion. No extra software or service running. Ties in to your firewall on the router. Then set up multiple pcs on different port numbers. I'd leave a client on a laptop maybe, only if it gets stolen. Then you can use tracert to find them. Then the sp may be able to help. I mean, sps are supposed to be tracking pirates after all with ips and we know how concrete they are.
