Thanks! All my photos need either a bit or a lot of tweaking, I just can't seem to put in the time at the moment though. :(

    A few from Paris

A few from my trip to Paris last weekend. Enjoy.

It took all week to edit 636 photos, but I ended up without about 50 that I liked. Not a bad percentage of decent shots, I think. I have a few more that I may end up processing, and a couple of panoramic stitches to work on, but that can wait.

You can see larger versions and the rest of the photos on my Flickr page.

Nice one of the tower at night, and also I adore how you captured the pigeon in flight with the statue!

That sounds like a nice "weekend" trip. This one is my favorite one posted but I like some of the other tower pictures even more which is saying something considering it's got to be one of the most photographed objects on earth.

I really like this supermonkey, have you got any tips for taking b&w photos? Bought myself an old nikon fe2 to have a play with film and I picked up a couple rolls of black and white film to have a play with. Cheers

Thanks everyone for the comments. With respect to the black and white conversions, I tend to think about the image not only as if it was taken with black and white film, but also how i visualize the image in my head.

In the past I made heavy use of the Channel Mixer adjustment in Photoshop, but these days I use the "Black and White" adjustment layer. Essentially the idea is the same - after Photoshop turns the image black and white I begin adjusting the various color channels to lighten or darken specific color ranges within the black and white image. For example, in the image you quoted, I dropped the cyan channel within the black and white conversion to simulate the effect of a red filter on black and white film. As I visualized the image in my head, I felt that a dark sky helped enhance the drama within the image. Other times I lighten or darken specific color channels in order to more accurately reflect the luminosity of an object, rather than simply rely on the object's lack of color.

    Edit:
Thanks :) Indeed, the trip was entirely too short; I needed 1 or 2 more days. My approach to vacation photos is: Yeah it's been photographed before, and yeah this is the same photo that countless others have taken. But, this one is mine. Sadly, I just thought of some different ways I could have photographed some places. Looks like I have a reason to go back. That and the bread.

Showreel Pano by jpb814, on Flickr

Made this with a few stills taken from video I shot recently, soon to be seen in my new showreel. Quite a lot of CA on the left hand tree which I'm a bit annoyed about, didn't actually notice it till I was making the pano...

Edit: Just in case anyone's interested; this was shot using the Technicolor Cinestyle picture style on a 550D, I forget the precise settings but I was using my m42 mount 35mm 2.8, I think roughly at f11. Colour corrected with the accompanying Cinestyle LUT in Prem Pro CS5, exported to photoshop with a little post pano contrast boosting to match how it looked in Premiere.

    Beautiful shot October!
how big of a deal are those picture styles on dSLR video?

Mine is not as serene or beautiful, but I was also getting frames from a video as images.
This is a recent from a GoPro:

I probably never would have thought about picture styles that much had I not been shooting video, afaik they don't really make much difference to stills when you shoot RAW. Video on the other hand, is nothing near RAW unfortunately so the flatter a colour profile the better, ther've been a few different ones available for a while but from everything I've seen Cinestyle seems to be the best. It's all about leaving as much latitude for post colour correction as possible, retaining as much detail in the shadows and highlights as the sensor can manage. Might put up an uncorrected version of that shot so you can see the difference :thumb:

Lovely shot of yours too, definitely want to get my hands on a GoPro at some point.
