im little curious to get some feedback from you guys, currently my rig is as follows Q6600 - Stock (no O/C) DDR3 8GB RAM AMD 6870 30GB SSD OYNX 60GB CORSAIR FORCE 500GB WD Blue Corsair TX 650W im wanting to upgrade the cpu i already have a motherboard lined up. but is upgrading to a i3 worth it? or do i really need to push the funds and go for i5 i do enjoy the bit of gaming on my pc, play around in photoshop, browsing etc...
Id save for at least a quad. Can you not get a second hand 2400/2500k/2600k/2700k from the marketplace?

Yes, I used that before I posted. Great benchmarking suite. Even though it's a later architecture and higher clock speed, you're still missing some proper cores with the i3 compared with your Q6600, hence why it's only marginally faster. I'v just had a quick google and it seems those SB quads have held their prices very well, so you are probably best going down the marketplace route.
The temps on the IB have stopped dead any frivolous upgrade ideas I had... One less i5 bargain on the MP!
I went from a clocked q6600 @3.4 GHz to an i5 655K @4 GHz and it wasn't an upgrade, except for being a bit cooler.... dunx
Yeah, I was very disappointed in IB too. I don't have much overclocking experience (so the bad temps didn't initially put me off), but I expected much more than the roughly 3-5% better IPC than we got from it. I expected more in the 20%+ region. As it stands now it's a pointless upgrade coming from SB.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/53?vs=289 According to the benches I looked at last year, even the i3 2100 is faster than the 6600 because the 6600 lacks on cpu mem controller - mem performance is crippled. For most things the i3 2100 for example beats the 6600 by a significant margin. Let's not even get into power consumption. The 6600 will be a real dinosaur in that area too. What you could do is get a modern motherboard with Z77 or Z68 and buy an i3 for it initially then upgrade later. That will crap all over your 6600 setup. I build an i3 2100 PC for my GF. Works pretty good. She uses photoshop. Only thing she needs is an SSD.
I have a Q6600 and am looking to upgrade to an i5 soon. Looking over the reviews, I'm not sure it's worth getting an IB 3570k over a SB 2500k, especially if the temps means I can squeeze a bit more of an overclock out of the SB.
i dont understand why people in a position now to upgrade would choose SB over IB, especially with the price difference (or lack of). 10-20% performance increase, PCIE3, less power and HD4000
It's the overclocking isn't it? IB doesn't overclock so well from what I've read. I am at 4.9ghz with my i5 2500k.
Price is the same and SB will overclock more, most here don't use onboard vdeo so that is irrelevant. IB runs hotter from what I've read despite due to the tim used. That said at work I'm building ivy but we do use onboard and at least for a while, will not overclock, despite buying a k series (it is nice to have the option) I would suggest a 2500k if you want to game and are happy to OC. 3570k if not
As far as I'm aware, you wouldn't notice a difference between the i3 and the i5 (in games) because your graphics card would limit you if you were to purchase an i5. Also be aware that the benchmarking tool you used was displaying a 3.1ghz i3, not the 3.3ghz that you would get from the same price Of course if you're doing more CPU intensive stuff then go for the i5 but don't expent a difference in games.
