Cable and Satellite providers can't share bandwidth as they are on completely different networks.

I don't know how it is where you are, but her (in the UK) cable providers have their own networks (although, as with most providers, your bandwidth is shared with other users, and the more that are online in your local group the slower your connection becomes).

I'm with Virgin Media on their supposedly fast connection, and am now looking around for a better, cheaper service, as their service has gone right downhill! I still get 10Mb downloads at good times, but I far too often can start to load pages and go make a drink while they load!

Speedtest.net is the best IMO. I’ve used it for a long time and it works great.

It's true, companies like BT, SKY etc. are still using the old copper lines that are used for telephones, but some cable companies are using fibre optic.

It's not always Virgins fault, sometimes the servers hosting the site could be having issues. Also Virgin could be doing some work in your area as they are doubling everyones speed this year. Yes they do cap speeds when you downloads a limit, but I have never had any issues.

There is a user on here that actually gets about 1000mb/sec. Think its on another post on here somewhere..

P.s. I thought when I saw the topic that this would turn into a speedtest thread (finally I have something to show!) :naughty: (my poor connection a month ago! :nono:)

It's not as good as it looks, gives good speedtests but gets throttled to hell except overnight. :wallbash:

Actually, the best speed test is to download a large file such as Ubuntu and see what speed you get.

Having good speeds is one thing but as mentioned above....if your line is shitty you will get higher latency and packet loss when playing games etc. Also when loading webpages it can sometimes take quite some time for the page to start loading.

I remember when we thought 256Kb downloads were lightning quick! now we moan if we get below 10Mb! how time flies! I do want to upgrade to Fibre as Talktalk have just activated it in my area, just cant justify the cost! But yeah speedtest.net is always pretty accurate for me!
