    Hi,

I've recently done a upgrade on my computer and every now and again (maybe 1-2 times a week) my computer freezes. It doesn't reset nor does it crash to bsod. The freeze happens when doing different tasks, web browsing playing games (only once during games).

Anyone got any idea what could be causing it? I didn't reinstall windows after the upgrade.

Did you change motherboard chipset during the upgrade? Such as going from P55 to Z77?

:duh: I should have asked that instead of my rather specific question.

I went from a Core i7 920 (1366) to a Core i7 3770k (1155). That was a new motherboard, processor and memory. My latest rig is in my signature.

if you didnt sysprep before you changed the hardware you are going to run into a number of problems like this, you should probs backup and do a reinstall as there is going to be alot of drivers hanging around for hardware that isnt there.

Can I reinstall without having to wipe the drive clean?

Yeah as Margo said above you're going to have a lot of drivers hanging around from your old kit which might be causing your issues. I'd recommend wiping it clean and starting again.

Yeah all the data is on the secondary. The problem or really an inconvenience is that Steam is installed on the SSD but alot of the games are on the storage via SteamTool. I have ALOT of games and Virgin broadband wont like me in the morning! haha.

The biggest problem is because there is limited space on the SSD I'll have to download one game at a time and then transfer it over. Unless I install Steam on d: and transfer the few games I like over to the ssd.

just move your steam folder, literally drag it, as long as all your games are installed in there then you are golden, then drag it back to the ssd after install. when you reinstall - disconnect your mech as well

edit: I just read your first bit about steam tool, with my steam, its all in the one folder, which I just move about with installations or whatever. Maybe you would be able to move all your games over to the mech with steam tool, then just copy the steam folder over there, and copy it back after reinstall and move back the games via steam tool? - that's just a guess.

Hi, I done the reinstall and everything seems to be working fine now. The internet started pissing about (Virgin...) so I switched to my Sky Broadband line and all is fine. Much more reliable.

I ended up downloading my games again and already backed up the saved files of the games that mattered.

    Thanks to

Marco Baggins, noizdaemon666 and SuicideNeil for your help, much appreciated.
