    Hi there,

I'm building a NAS, and need some advice on operating systems.

As far as I can tell, the best are FreeNAS and Ubuntu Server. FreeNAS is made entirely for NAS servers, and have the latest ZFS file system.

I will be having 4x1TB disks in RAID5 I think (so I'll be having 2.79 GB of disk space, and an array size of 3GB).

As I will store some confidential information, I will need to have the ENTIRE data partition encrypted. Can FreeNAS do that? I've heard that encryption and ZFS doesn't go well together. Is Ubuntu Server better in that regards?

I will access the files via FTP (or STFP).

Any suggestions on what OS to choose?

Openmediavault all the way. I run it from a USB pen drive hence saving a HDD bay, it's been flawless for me in over 6 months. Great for storing, streaming, print serving, etc...

How about disk encryption and RAID 5 with OMV?

Sorry, not sure but there's a wealth of info on the OMV forums.
