Fair enough, my experience is otherwise but I'm not going to argue.

 

Offroading doesn't equal towing though. The weight of the trailer will supply all of the weight necessary over the back wheels. Most double cab pickups tow extremely well.

Not sure about the Freelander's towing potential tbh! Can't go wrong with a disco though, but I doubt it's within his budget new.

I'd always advise people to consider fitting a bigger radiator from the off if they intend to tow livestock regularly. The slow speed + high revs needed to make it up steeper hills mean that the engine simply can't get enough cool air to keep cool. Fitting an oversize rad only costs a couple of hundred and the temps should never be a problem again. This isn't necessary on all vehicles, but it can't do any harm. My dad's old 4x4, a Daihatsu Fourtrack, used to overheat at first, but after fitting a bigger rad, the temps never rose at all. Super engine in that thing, people used to transplant them into Defenders, because the Defender engine and gearbox are a bit, well, poor.

Subaru XV: had no idea those things even existed. They look absolutely perfect, which is probably why they're out of my budget. And they don't get fantastic reviews to be honest.

As for off roading in trucks. I've been there and done it, some work and some don't, just like 4x4 cars. Seems like it's a moot point. What I don't get is, why aren't they front-wheel drive when you go to 2-wheel. It'd pull better in the mud and wouldn't be so tail-happy on tarmac.

Seriously considering a Defender, it could be my main ride for a few years and eventually become a toy. Would a new one last 40 years like the old ones though? Interesting thought..........

 

From what I can tell, little has changed, and I'd expect the body to last forever. However, they are notorious for gearbox problems, especially if they are used to tow, although this might be very outdated now and newer ones might be much better. I despise the interior of defenders though, not changed since the beginning, and are hence massively outdated, uncomfortable, and ugly.

Still, as you said, would make a great toy in the future.

 

The defender interior _has_ changed. It's still a small cabin, but much more modern these days.

I love defenders. Such a pity they stopped making the V8 though.

 

ive got a 4 day weekend this weekend so ive had my nose burried in guild wars 2 for hours upon hours. but i did surface for air today to get a coat of wax on the SHO. with any luck ill find the energy to clean the interior out tomorrow as its disgraceful.

Ah my mates capri, its very nice. has had allot spent on her! Only just had scooby since the weekend, but dam does it pull. not sure i'll have a clean licence for long.

Was fun driving those two around (doing the speed limit ) However, next week it will be a capri, scooby and also a 2L Caterham running riot on the streets.

 

that 2l caterham ought to show you what "fast" is really like.

Love the RS2's - absolutely gorgeous cars and understated as you can get! Fairly rare these days too!
