Hello, I would like to turn my PC into a movie server / Media server. What is the best software to do this.
Many thanks I have windows 7 Home Premium though. Will this cause any issues? I would like to play all my mkv files and utilize the 4tb of disk space i have
If you are going to keep Windows 7 on the PC and want to use it as a media server as well, then you should be able to do it with Windows Media Centre and DLNA? What are you going to be playing the movies on? If however you want to setup a dedicated PC as a media server, XBMC is the way to go.
The pc will not be used for anything else as I have my laptop. It depends what the best and easiest option is. PC in my sig is going to be the server/storage pool. Laptop will be what I view the films on.
There is a simple way to do it, simply install VLC on your laptop, enable the sharing of your movies on your desktop PC and play the MKV files directly.
Hmm true or network drive i guess but I would like it to look all nice with details about the films etc.
Have to jump on the xbmc wagon here. Read about it in another post on here somewhere, played about with it, then within a few weeks had built a htpc for the living room just to run it. Awesome bit of software and i'm just starting to scratch the surface.
