If you are going to keep Windows 7 on the PC and want to use it as a media server as well, then you should be able to do it with Windows Media Centre and DLNA?

What are you going to be playing the movies on?

If however you want to setup a dedicated PC as a media server, XBMC is the way to go.

The pc will not be used for anything else as I have my laptop.

It depends what the best and easiest option is.

PC in my sig is going to be the server/storage pool.

Laptop will be what I view the films on.

There is a simple way to do it, simply install VLC on your laptop, enable the sharing of your movies on your desktop PC and play the MKV files directly.

Plex is what I use. It is great. I hadn't heard of my movies but it looks interesting.

Have to jump on the xbmc wagon here. Read about it in another post on here somewhere, played about with it, then within a few weeks had built a htpc for the living room just to run it. Awesome bit of software and i'm just starting to scratch the surface.
