Having real issues stripping the paint from my fractal design r2. I really need a chemical soloution to this problem, as I can sand the flat panels but will struggle to get in the mesh bits. Used nitromors on a bit of case that I've cut and don't need and it seems to have no effect. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Nitromors is nasty stuff but it really needs to be worked in to the paint with a stiff brush for it to work optimally. I stripped the paint of my old Corsair Dominator GT ram with Nitromors; the paint started to blister almost instantly. If the paint isn't blistering with Nitromors, I don't think you'll get it off with anything short of sulphuric acid.
+ 1 for Nitromors!!. Wear gloves as this stuff is leathal!! And not rubber ones as it burns through them easily as i discovered last time I used it
Yep, my hands are a bit tender. Not too bad. Just to let you guys know, the paint wouldn't blister at all. However, the nitromors did soften the paint enough to make wire wool an option.
You need something with dichloromethane in it, something which I believe Nitromors no longer has due to a silly EU regulation. You might be able to get a bottle of the stuff on eBay or something, then add it to the Nitromors. I won't be held responsible for injury or death that may occur however
Leave it to soak. Leave some cling-film over it or something to keep it from evaporating. Leaving it for more than a few hours should be more than sufficient
Been here and done this. You need a Dichloramethene (DCM) based stripper which is banned for sale in retail in the EU. Only available to industry. No more cheap paint stripping I'm afraid. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRADITIONAL-STRONG-Paint-Varnish-Remover-THICK-PROFESSIONAL-USE-1X-5-Litres-/251287255272?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ&hash=item3a81e338e8 Just ******** your way into getting some. "I'm a professional automotive restorer" or something like that, You will need heavy rubber gloves, full face protection and a respirator. Use outdoors ONLY and collect the used stripper in a metal container similar to the one the product comes in. Mark the container clearly with "USED DCM DISPOSE (DATE)", Seal it well and hand it in to the council or a graffiti removal firm. DO NOT DISPOSE OF INTO THE GROUND! Don't waste your time and money with DCM free strippers, They will not work well.
Is the case painted or powder coated? IIRC, Nitro isn't as adept at shifting powder coating as it is with paint.
I was just going to ask that..... I used one of these to strip the roof of my car back to bare metal once. The paint had cracked and it was rusty.. http://www.toolsdiy.co.uk/shop/view/drill-attachments/paint-and-rust-remover-wheel/
I emailed fractal as that was my first thought, but the rep said it was painted.. Either way Doubling the number of applications seems to make it easy enough to rub off. Still doesn't bubble though.
is there anything less *lethal* to strip paint off a Dimastech? sorry to hijack the thread, but don't want to strip my hands either
I can't be arsed with the hassle of storing stuff like this, specially with kids about. I just ask a car resprayers near us if he would clean paint off my case, they charge bit. But the hassle of sourcing stuff, waiting on a good weather day, the issue of disposal and the fact my boys won't get there mits on hazardous chemicals makes it worth it.
Sand it down, lightly, and go again? For better paint coverage, stand the spray can in a bowl of warm water before you start.
They seemed miffed when I first whent to them 2 years ago and charged £90 but now they charge £30 if it's ok for it to take a couple of days. £40 if they are busy and I want it done next day some times they prime it for free if the case has no dints I'm lazy and not having to faff about makes it ideal for me If I had some space and an external garage with a very secure lockup which the kids could not get into, I'd be doing it my self
You could get a quote for sandblasting, but that's expensive too. Hmmm, I've got some overstocked army-supply-paint-remover. Don't know if it's DCM based, but it used to throw bubbles Isn't as effective now, then again I've been storing it for ten years.
