The time has come, the walrus said, to speak of many things........

IN this case - time to upgrade the graphics card. I currently have an MSI GTX 460, and is getting a little long in the tooth. It's struggling to keep up with some of the more recent releases and is admittedly a couple of years old now (would have changed it last year but a period of unemployment resulted in a lack of funds!!!!)

Now, I appreciate that the NVidia 700 series is just around the corner, but I still have a strict budget and cannot afford any of this at the moment. Similarly, the 670 & 680 series are also out of my budget - so I'm looking at the GTX 660 (NOT Ti).

What would you wonderful Bit-Techers suggest? budget is no more than £170 (this is finite nothing above this). I'm looking to buy within the next week.

    Thanks

I would suggest a second hand 580 and save yourself some coin - there's absolutely no need to buy new these days unless you really don't mind spending money. You could quite easily get a superclocked 580 for somewhere around £150 and it would walk all over a 660.

When I upgraded from a 460, I bought the 2GB 7850, and I've been really pleased with it. It plays pretty much all games on high/max. However for £170 you could also get a 7870 for a bit more performance.

The 7850, mines the asus DCUII, also overlclocks incredibly well, for me it was just a case of going into Catalyst Control centre and pushing all the sliders to max :D

I wouldn't recommend going nvidia on anything less than a 670. The performance for value just isn't there compared to amd offerings in that price tier like the 7870.

I use one of them cards and I find it a great card for single display at 1920 x 1080. I've lost interest in gaming slightly so i"m going to sell it.

Not too sure if this helps - but I am running an AMD FX8120 & Asus Crosshair V (AMD 990/SB950).

Would an AMD card run better in this setup rather than an NVidia?

Something else I have to take into account, I duel boot my system with Windows 8 on one partition & Opensuse Linux on the second!

What's the opinions on the GTX-660 Ti?

I've been able to push the budget by another£100 to around £260-£270 so I can squeeze in a cheap 670 or decent 660ti.

thanks for the reply's - but as docodine above has pointed out - as I am running Linux as well, I'm better off sticking with the green camp. So I've gone for a GTX670 - the one above in actual fact (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-e...x-dl-dvi-dp-hd). Should arrive tomorrow!
