Lovely car ryan, love a bit of Mk.2! :D

Plans? I always think they're best enjoyed as nearly standard, obviously YMMV, but if you stance it I will kill you. :p

I'm not big on VW, but that is a very clean, good looking motor!

Yeah that's gorgeous! Currently drooling over the Life On Mars Ford Cortina as well. Found out my dad had an identical model in the 80's. Please someone persuade me not to swap out the A4!

    My other half had a 1.6 8v Mk2.
They're great. Too bad hers was all sorts of f***d - bent chassis to start with.
Even so, there was something about it when it was driving.

They have a certain feel, much like the old 205 GTI 1.6.

On rails. The original Scirocco had the same feel.

They're direct, and very controllable... unlike many more modern cars.
Great feel in all controls, once you get used to the unassisted-everything.

Thanks for the comments guys, just picked up some new BBS for it too.

    @AlexB - Mk2s can be 1.3, 1.6 or 1.8, think theres 1.1 aswell.

Ah, I presumed he meant GTI. You're right - they make boring ones too (My first car was a 1.3 mk2!)

Some very nice motor vehicles here guys!

I have been looking at Clio 182's a bit recently. Other than the infamous bonnet catches are there any major reliability things to look out for? So Arch, check your bonnet catch isn't too corroded :thumb:

    Bonnet catch is fine :)

Belts are important on these should have been done recently, £600 job.

Had a fun day today with A2, it went in for a service a cambelt and waterpump change in the week got it back its been fine until today where it decided to tell me my oils low as was the water, topped it up an was going to pop into the garage to get them to look at it.
Anyway got home still stunk even more so I went to remove the bonnet. On the A2 theres two knobs in the car you twist an they unlock the bonnet. One unlocked the other just spun freely meaning i cant get in. Theres no hinge to the bonnet on these things it comes clean off for tea tray use ETC.
Checked the dipstick to see what was in there as i was going to go to said garage. Pulled it out its covered in mayo.

Long story short its now been towed to the garage an placed in front of their shutters where ill be waiting tomorrow morning.

The exhaust is made of cheese, and expensive to replace with OE. Cambelts are an expensive and difficult job, so you need to make sure they've been done properly. Other than that, the usual things that can go on powerful FWD - engine/gearbox mounts and suspension components. All have a hard time (especially if driven properly), so budget for replacing a few bits and pieces to get yours going properly again.

It's worth getting a ride in a really well-sorted example so you know how it should go when in good nick. :)

Oh, and if you can afford it, buy a Trophy. They'll be a great investment, you'll struggle to lose any money as long as you keep it nice.

legoman: Oil with mayo = coolant in there. Is there an oil/water heat exchanger in the A2? If not it sounds like head damage/gasket failure.

I think a friend from a few years ago has a 182 cup. I know he used to and then got a Mazda 3 MPS, but last I heard he had bought another 182. I might have to try and start talking to him again :naughty:

£600 for a cambelt is insanity, I assume they have to drop the engine out or take half the front of the car off to do it?

Anything else as fun as the 182 for around the same price but maybe not so expensive to maintain that you would recommend? I was thinking about an mx5 but apparently we need more than 2 seats... *grumble* *grumble*

Bumper has to come off to get access, if you want cheaper get a 172 without AC about £300. In reality you only have to do this every 36k so if you get one done recently you wouldn't have to do it for 5 yearish. Otherwise if you keep on top of things you shouldn't have any big expenses, just remember if you get a trophy the Sach's dampers need regular refurb. :thumb:
