Story here, Bit-Tech's article on DDR4 from 2010 can be found here and Crucial's DDR4 announcement here.
I wouldn't bet on it. DDR2 is expensive even though DDR3 has been around for a long while. It was the same with DDR and DDR2. I think next upgrade I'm just going to overspec the ram and save me the hassle.
DDR2 dropped in price when DDR3 came out, the reason the price went up is because it is manufactured less now. Manufacturing costs tend to go up when there is less demand. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
That's great, but when are the new platforms out? Z87 has only recently been released and companies like asus and gigabyte are heavily invested right now in z87. I bet 1150 chips don't have a ddr4 controller on board so they're out. Only thing I can think of that might make use of this is haswell-e. Whenever that turns up.
I wonder if AMDs APUs coming in January will support this. Any possibility of both a ddr3 and ddr4 controller being present to enable backwards compatibility? And the extra bandwidth would certainly help to GPU side alot. The timing seems to fit fairly well.
I remember on point where DDR2 became so expensive and DDR3 was so cheap it worked out better to buy a new mobo and DDR3 than to buy some DDR2 as an upgrade. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Expect intels next CPUs to support ddr4, not sure what else will. DDR 4 and DDR 3 memory controller on one chip would be super difficult to sort out and probably super expensive. There was boards back in ddr3 launch days that supported both ( 2 and 3)they were very expensive though.
As far as I have seen the first intel that will support DDR4 is to be Haswell-EP Xeon followed by Haswell-E core parts. It still seems kind of hazy if Broadwell will have full DDR4 support or not... might have to wait for Skylake on the mainstream end. Stuff on the AMD side only thing I've seen confirmed to use DDR4 so far is the Arm based server boards coming out early next year.
Always assumed the cpu and gpus on the latest tablets were mhz starved if nothing else as people have gained alot of benifit from overclocking them. We shall see I guess with the 3 major tablet manufactures all just releasing there updated products be at least 8-10months before we see if ddr4 is been used by any of them.
