And today.......

Now it's the kind of dabbing. A little sanding here, and grinding there. Unfortunately (it takes time) this is necessary.

How much weight would it hold you reckon?

 

Too awesome. It looks like you need a really long sanding block to get some of the wobbles out.

Thanks. And after final adjustments I think it will hold 150 kg on the narrow side - further from the leg. Now I can sit there ,but carefully, very carefully

Effects of grinding. By the way, "I patented" a new grinding wheel for polishing and longitudinal grinding machine for this job

To be honest I've enough working in a dust mask for x hours a day.









And now biiig request for help. Color effect that I wanted to achieve - that is smoked oak, does not go as I would have liked to.

So I did some wood samples. Speak up on them.





1 - Oak waxed dark.
2 - Oak stained and waxed white
3 - Oak waxed white
4 - Oak stained white.
5 - Oak stained white and waxed dark.

 

My personal choice .. 5.
(and man do I love this build/log!)

 

I have been looking all threw this build and I must say I really like the lighter brown color it has now...

Out of the choices here I would go 1 or 5.

Hmm I'm going to go against the grain here (I'm so sorry for that) and say that I like the number 3 finish most. Your desk is a heavy piece of wood, very solid, but at the same time it's very organic. If you go for something too dark, then you could end up with a very imposing lump of dark brown, which IMO would be a waste of the wood. Having a nice light colour (similar to how the wood is now in it's unfinished state) I think would be utterly beautiful. You don't need anymore "oomph" as the design itself provides that, if you stained/waxed it dark I think it would lose a lot of it's appeal (to me at least). If it was dark, it would simply look out of place in so many rooms, yet a light tone would work brilliantly against almost any backdrop.

Oh and as a side note, after seeing the pictures taken a little further distance, this design is remarkably similar to a desk I had planned for next year rofl. I mean the shape is so similar (yours is wood mind so it's naturally slightly different proportion-wise) that I'm really quite taken aback, how's that for coincidence eh? Guess I'm going to have change everything up again now as you got there first by quite a margin

I'd like to see more options. There's a LOT of exposed edge/against the grain material, and it will stain very dark compared to the rest. A very light stain applied several times might work better.
