Remember GCN isn't required for Mantle.

    Interesting!

I presume AMD cards would be optimised from the get go but Nvidia could follow suit if Mantle is not tied to GCN.

I know what you mean dude. Even with a single water cooled R9 290X there was something stuttery about it. It wasn't related to framerate necessarily. I can't describe it, but the overall experience didn't feel as smooth as I would have liked. Shame really. It was a great card watercooled with cracking temps and pretty good clock speeds. Shame about the damn whine I had on mine. I just couldn't learn to live with it :wallbash:

Despite that, if I'd seen the unlocked 290's early enough I would have been all over a pair of those!!

Its early days the cards haven't been out long, i'll give 'em a chance but can't help thinking I should of bought 780ti s, I was swayed by the value proposition and glowing reviews.

+1 mate. The 4gb of VRAM was a huge selling point for me also.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from making a purchase here, as I do appreciate that the value for money factor is a really big one, but I was pretty shocked when I took the stock HSF from my £440 R9 290X. The quality of build and components at that price point was a real disappointment. The TIM application was the worst I've ever seen and the heatsink was pretty badly scratched/scuffed. It was generally just a mess. Hopefully, the AIB partners will be able to sort all these issues out!

Shameless plug here, but I still have an EK CSQ full nickel R9 block and backplate which someone can have for a steal because I'm sick of looking at it now!! LOL!!

Used one in a build last week, not too loud at all.

Read that as HIPSTER 850W, some strange images went through my mind....

I've heard the volume of your headset, I doubt you could hear a A380 landing on your house :p

Just got my Asus 290, without even overclocking it - Holy shitballs it is loud when going full tilt.

Having serious thoughts about either buying a Arctic Accelero III or returning under DSR and getting a 280X.

I'm the proud owner of a HIS R9 290 (non-X) soon to add a second Sapphire 290 after crimbo and both going under water :brrr:

Your scores seem a little low on 3Dmark

    Here's my results with my R9 290 (non-X)

    Heaven 4.0 - 290 @ Stock clocks (Catalyst 13.11 beta 9.4)

    3Dmark11 Performance Preset - 290 @ Stock clocks (Catalyst 13.11 beta 9.4)

    3Dmark11 Performance Preset - 290 @ mild OC (1050mhz core / 1300mhz vram) (Catalyst 13.11 beta 9.4)

Looking at your results it seems at least in 3Dmark that your CPU may be holding that beast of a GPU back as your Physics/Combined score is quite low compared to your Graphics score

If you had a better CPU I think you would be looking at a 3Dmark score similar to my OC'd results or maybe a little higher with a 290X.

You may just need to cool them if you have a less than optimal setup, though of course could be CPU.

More on AMD clockspeed shenanigans with 290s

Also ensure you have the latest BIOS/drivers with cranked up fan profile.

If you read the Toms Hardware article about it, you'll see that the retail cards were running their fans below the intended value.

As a comparison, the press 290x runs at 2050rpm. Same issue with the 290.

Haven't touched CCC, used Afternurner to change the OC to 780/1300Mhz for mining and the fan is running at about 2400RPM and keeping it at 85 degrees. This is doing Litecoin mining so I expected the heat, but the fan is damn loud compared to my Asus 7970TOP which with a massive OC can put out as many kh/s as the R290 at stock whilst being quieter.

had the day off yesterday and mine got punished, was double XP on battlefield4 so I did a good 4hr session on it this thing gets loud and hot highest I had it was 79o and a one point thought my PC was gonna take off.

I did encounter an issue tho after a few hours I was receiving massive fps drops it felt like lag but got the fps counter up it runs smooth 70-100 on 1920 on ultra but this issue the fps was dropping for 80 to below 10.

anybody else had this? is it over heating?

only thing that worries me is that is quiet cool in my house atm but come next summer if its like the last temps on gpu could hit 100!

I decided that I didn't want the gpu at 95c all the time so I set the targed in CCC to 80c and max allowed fan speed to 100% so it would maintain 80c max temp... only this didn't happen. The card decided it would rather throttle its clocks than use its extra allowed fan speed to keep it at 80c. This may have been fixed in newer drivers I don't know as I have never tried it again... I always set a constant 55% or 60% using afterburner beta 17 for the stock cooler. This keeps it around 80c.

For fps drops I have only encountered problems when using vsync even though I know it can maintain well over 60fps, for some reason it regularly dips... probably the power saving features of the card when it detects that it isn't pushing its max frames

As for summer, I think these cards will need to be at an unbearable fan speed to keep them cool using reference cooler when its pushing 30c room temp.

You only have to hit 59fps for it to drop to 30 remember!

Are you saying BF4 caps you to 30 if you drop below 60?
