Is it worth moving from a GTX 670 to a GTX 780? Looking to move to a 30 inch monitor this year and have a chance of getting my hands on a 780 for a very reasonable price. But not much point if A), not much of an increase in performance or B), I would be wiser to wait a while to see what new if any GPU's are coming?
Do it, Glenn. I run a 670 on 30" monitor, and it's great, but you have to shave off the very highest detail settings in some games at 1600p (not that it makes all that much difference). The 780 will manage much better and give you more headroom for future titles.
What resolution on the 30" ? I would possibly suggest looking at the 290x (when custom coolers come out) but AMD seems blasphemy around these parts. We talking 780 or 780 ti ?
A 30" monitor is usually around 2560x1600 or 2560x1440, depending on screen ratio, according to Nexxo in another thread And it will be the 780.
I would wait till 800 series to be honest. That is what I am doing and saving for that upgrade but that is just me The Mothership
780s are lovely cards, and certainly better at driving the higher resolutions with all the options turned up. 670s seem to struggle, and prefer being at 1080p.
You right 600 series to 700 series not most step up, and you pay round £400? Why not save up a few moths for 800 series .
Im running a Dell 3011 with 680's SLi'd and can run everything at max comfortably, why not pop a second 670 in, you could pick one up cheaply enough, as a temporary measure and then when the 800's are out get that if you see the need? If space allows, a second 670 would be the cheapest option at the moment. That said, if you're getting a properly good deal on the 780, it's a bit more futureproof and will hold value a little better (most likely) if you want to upgrade now and then again later. 30" displays like VRAM and GPU resources, so more VRAM and more processing power = win.
I picked up a 2nd 670 as it was £125. Pretty much doubled my frames in BF4 and runs well. Problem with a single 670 is to get a single card to better it you have to spend £££££££
An even better alternative to going down this route would be overclocking the 670. The 770 is nothing more than a clock bumped 680. The 670 clock for clock is only marginally slower than a 680.
I would say - if you can get second 670 in SLI, take it. If you dont want to play SLI, then get 780. Even if we get 800 series in 3-4 months, it will be expensive, like £500+ for 880. Good price for 780 is around £300-320, which if it is in your case, then I would go for it. I will be selling my 670 in month or two and be getting a 780. It is good 30-50% performance increase, what I noticed in reviews (will be getting card with ~980-1000MHz)
