I was driving past a unmarked police car that had a camera set up next to it. I am sure I was not speeding but I am a bit paranoid. is it a speed check or are they after people that don't have tax/mot.
probably anpr camera, there is one outside my work place every weekend. they just sit there scanning plates until the computer says no
It could have been a DVLA car, but they're usually marked cars with big signs saying "Tax Disc Checking". Was it a smallish camera set up on a tripod next to the car?
yes small and the camra was on a tripod . my friend said it was two offices in uniform Inside with a computer. the car and camra was unmarked as well as the cam
Pretty sure the car has to be marked and/or Camera signs/repeaters along the road. Imagine the uproar if unmarked cars were sniping people for speeding, there would be meltdown.
I got nailed a few years back the same way near Guilford. They are crafty but thank God I wasn't on my bike that day otherwise they would have thrown the keys away
Most likely this, there will be marked units further up the road to actually stop any cars that get flagged up. On a busy road it's a very easy way to pickup multiple offenders in a small space of time, so is efficient and a good use of resources. To my knowledge only the DVLA, VOSA & Police use roadside ANPR. Come October when tax discs are done away with I'm sure we will see more of these check points.
Lots of patrol cars have ANPR cameras in them, running constantly. They check for insurance/tax, but also the police database to see if they have an interest in the vehicle. Certainly isn't illegal for them to be doing it.
Are you from the US by any chance? I know a few of my American friends were amazed by the use of ANPR in the UK as in the US it's seen a government spying so isn't widely used. Gun ownership seems to make them a little paranoid [can of worms]
