At GDC Intel just dropped this info:
    - Intel announces X99 chipset and Core i7 Extreme Edition CPU(s) will have 8 cores and DDR4 support.

    - 9 series motherboards will support Broadwell. Upgrade this year, swap out your CPU next year.

    - Intel Pentium Anniversary edition CPU - cheap K-series OCing on LGA1150. This is awesome news for OCers and upgraders on a budget and potential FX6300 killer imo (combined with what a new 9 series offers versus antiquated 990FX), but I don't know total build costs yet.

    - Intel 'Devil's Canyon' CPU is the new K-series with better TIM (read: soldered) and 'updated' Haswell design. I've seen some of the technical info that will be released later, but Ivy/Sandy Core i7 owners looking to upgrade should reaaaaally be taking note. Even current Haswell owners might be interested in a swap out.

    - Iris Pro (L4 cache in some form) is coming to Broadwell CPUs as a K-series.

Sounds interesting, but also expensive for the X99 stuff.

Am I being thick here, or does this mean that X99 boards will eventually come in socket LGA 1150 AND LGA 2011-3 flavours?

I'm on the verge of pressing the button to get an Intel mITX and you come out with this today.

.. sigh ok, I'll wait a little longer.

No, they will be a future socket, as yet not officially disclosed, but a creative Google search will yield some info.

    "Intel Pentium Anniversary edition CPU...".

Well, that gets a curious "Ooooo!" from me.

Hang on, you mean future 'chipset' not future 'socket' - sockets are announced

So LGA 2011-3 will get its own chipset, distinct from X99 - now that makes sense.

It wasn't on the slides today soooo 'unofficially disclosed' if there is evidence out there.

I really need to get serious about 3D design to justify this purchase.

I'm on the same boat. Was going to change my current rig (Q6600) bu the end of the month and this annouce came out ... another few month wait then xD. Will buy myself an SSD and at least replace the dead HD5870. This should give quite a boost and I'll still be able to reuse them.

Is this what they call a 'tock' in PC circles? :)

Suddenly waiting a little longer feels even more worth it.

Gotta say I also like that Intel are going to release an 8 core CPU.

It's a shame to admit that software developers only really do things for Intel. But, so long as they do then AMD's Visheras will continue to flourish.

8 core support really ought to be a given now. We've had big cored CPUs for what seems like forever, it's time the software caught up.

I must say though, running Windows 8 on my hex cored Intel shows really surprising results. I never thought that a 1.7ghz processor could run games. Seems I was completely wrong.
