SketchUp Sketchup Components Collection (SCC) Discussion

Hi there,

As part of my next project, I'm going to be accurately modeling a load of components. I'm using Autodesk Inventor and Blender so won't be exporting them as sketchup files, but I know that Sketchup can import .stl files fine so I'll use those (plus they work very well in other packages too)

So first up is an XSPC EX360 Crossflow Radiator

Warning: This is a very high poly model (~140k polys) as all the fins are also geometry.

It's as accurate as I could make it, all the measurements were made using calipers on an actual EX360 rad.

The model may need to be scaled depending on which program you used. I scaled it down by a factor of 10 when I imported into Blender from Inventor (I made the fins in Blender). So you may have to scale it up by 10 when importing it, not sure on that but it should be obvious enough, just bear in mind that it's going to be factors of 10 out in terms of units if it's not correct.

 

Are the internals accurate?

 

If by internals you mean have I modeled all the interior pipes and reservoir bits, no. I didn't think that people would be using this for complex computational fluid dynamics so I didn't think it would be worth the time...

However, the ports are in exactly the right place, which combined with accurate outside are about as far as any normal user would require.

Again this is a rather high poly model (given it's size) so bear that in mind if you'd like to use it. I've modeled some of the interior parts as it's visible through the acrylic. I didn't bother with the inside of the block itself though, given it won't ever be seen so would be just a waste of resources.

 

So today I decided to have a stab at modeling an EK D5 X-Top complete with an Laing D5 Vario pump installed. It should all be accurate to the same degree as the models I posted above.

The model doesn't come with the wires and plugs sadly as they won't really be usable after exporting (just static geometry).

Hi guys,

I just started with sketchup to work out my new mod before starting it. I dont know everything yet obviously, but can anyone tell me why my sketchup gets stuck why i try to import the .stl files of maki role?

I would have liked to use those components for testfitting and stuff.

Please help me out!

If this is not the correct thread, please point me onto the right direction

 

The STL-files from Maki are not ment for SketchUp, but for AutoCad, Solidworks or any other big CAD-software.

SketchUp isn't made for high poly models and gets stuck while trying to import them. With SketchUp you're looking for SKP-files.

 

Thanks for making clear! I thought it would just work, as there is an .STL import feature in SketchUp!

 

You can import STL-files, but they need to consist of less polygons.

 

Hey man, didn't realise that Sketchup had issues with the .stl files (they are decently high poly so I should have figured). I may be able export in some better formats for you tonight/tomorrow. Sketchup seems to import .dwg files quite well, so I'll see if I can make those. Any parts in particular that you were interested in?

Have a look at Jazzle's SketchUp Collection (and then give the guy some well-deserved rep). Many of the components you are looking for are already there.

 

Has anyone seen an RV02 model knocking about?

 

After over 10 years of running it, I'm going to be closing down my site.

I will keep it online for the foreseeable future, but, unless there's huge demand, I will be removing the ability to submit new items.

Let me know your thoughts.

 

I wonder if, since we have space for photo albums on Bit-Tech forums, we could also create a communal pool of just generally useful files: SketchUp components, templates, bits of code, diagrammes etc.
