The dell they tested against was dual Xeon, non? I waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant. The only real thing stopping me converting to mac now is the thought of repurchasing all the software I own and giving up my soundcard... But the thought of being able to buy VERY nice hardware...And being able to run pro tools on that thing...Mama. *n
I wouldnt worry about that, the Apple sound chipset is very nice. Much better than a Nforce SonicStorm and most of the £100-£150 sound cards. Oh and ITunes rocks!
But my soundcard has very nice ins/outs, optical ports and so on...and a dedicated phono and mic in. Mac hardware = expensive... Anyone want to buy me some MOTU rackmount gear *n
Sort of, yes. But with things like BIOS and drivers to consider, there is a subtle (but none the less vital) difference.
Apple posted a Quake3 benchmark, Radeon 9800pro, which shows that while a 3GHz 800mhz fsb P4 cranks out 275fps at 1024x768, the G5 spits out 337 fps! Now I want one even more!
Don't forget the 1ghz Hypertransport link it has. (Developed by AMD ) And no, I don't know how it would compare to a Athlon 64
I've never wanted a Mac before Buy one of these... ...Or get a car in october and a new PC next spring (Athlon64 hopefully)? Margh. *n
Macs use ordinary RAM and normal IDE hard drives, but PCI and AGP needs to be specially made. You can't pick up a card from Best Buy and drop it in a Mac. I think a few Geforce 3's could. The hardware looks at numbers differently is the only way I know how to put it. They do it backwards from the way PCs do it. According to this guy, Apple may have a little problem with the truth. I just can't imagine Apple Lying. Next thing you know, somebody will find a bug in a Microsoft product.
That website pritty much sums it up Like I said real bechmarks would show an ordinary PC taking a dump on the "world's fastest personal computer".
*sigh of relief* Ok, now this site makes sense. Once again, Apple is misleading customers into a buying frenzy. I'd just like to know his explinations for the Quake 3 benchmarks, so I can go on building PC's
yea and Toms hardware (ok not the most reliable of sources but i dont think even they could be this wrong) show a P4 3gig and 9700 pro as getting close to 400fps in q3
Ok: a list of a few things holding me back from being a Mac user: 1. No more self brewing of the computer 2. I do use photoshop a lot, yet I can't say good bye to games like UT 2003 3. I am an expierienced PC user/tweaker and simply wouldn't know what I should do with a mac 4. Mac designs suck IMO (cooooooler master rules! ) 5. Although I really hate it, I couldn't say good bye to windows either (been born and raised with microsoft) 6. I really hate apple mice (1 button thingies) 7. No more water cooling or overclocking. 8. What is there to mod on an apple?
That link doesnt say much, except that apple claim the latest p4s are slower and that dell claim they are faster than the G5. No suprise there. Using manufacture benchmarks is not a good idea.
www.icrontic.com has an interesting read on the misleading benchmark performed by aple. Aparently they disabled hyperthreading on the DELL machines during multithread benchmarks and were using some maloc libray thinger for the mac that was more optimized than the one they used for the DELL comps.
